Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

I have listened to this song many a times and it appears a typical Raj Kapoor movie song all the way. It is obviously sung by Mukesh. And I was convinced that Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan have to be the lyricist and Music directors respectively. So I was mightily surprised to know that I was off target. The lyricist for this movie Chhaliya is Qamar Jalalabadi and the music director duo is Kalyanji Anandji for this movie. And I must say that they have done very good imitation of Shailendra and Shankar Jaikishan, who were they the top lyricist and music director in Bollywood.

“Mera Naam Joker” was a labour of love for Raj Kapoor and he had made this movie with great hopes and expectations. Unfortunately, the story was ahead of its times and the Indian movie watchers were not ready for such movies in 1970. The movie flopped and Raj Kapoor suffered great losses as a result.

Here is a duet from “Sangam” picturised on Raj Kapoor and Vyjyanti Mala. The people involved in creating this song are the usual suspects, viz Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh and Lata. This song is a party song, and this movie seemed to have quite a few party songs, I do not know why.

I know that a song sung by two singers ( typically one male and one female singer) is called a duet or “dogaana”, but what about a song sung by three singers ? Anyone has any idea ? Is it called a “tigaana” or a “triet” ?

It is a very sweet song to listen to. Almost everyone associated in this song ( except the lyricist) was a newcomer to Bollywood industry and was trying to find his/ her feet. But their collaboration created this masterpiece that is remembered fondly to this day.

I have posted one song from “Dil Hi to hai”. That song viz “Tum agar mujhko na chaho to koi baat nahin” was sung by Mukesh and it is a very well known Mukesh song.

This movie also had another memorable song picturised on Raj Kapoor. This time the singer was not Mukesh, but Manna Dey. And this song is just as wonderful, if not more. This song has to be among the most memorable semi classical songs in the history of Bollywood movies. Sahir had written the lyrics and Roshan was the music director.

It is one of the iconic songs in Bollywood history, one that I have listened to many a times since childhood. That was in 1970s, and now we are in 2008, and this song was from circa 1950s! has this song aged, or has it become less known after all these decades ? No chance. this song continues to be just a popular as any venerable 52 year old song can expect to be. And this song is in good sprightly health too, one that is unlikely to become forgotten with passage of time. It is a timeless classic, there is no doubt about that.

Mukesh sings a wonderful philosophical song penned by Shailendra and set to tune by Shankar Jaikishan. The movie is Aah, a Raj Kapoor starrer.

Raj Kapoor is very much present in the picturisation of this song, but this song is not picturised on Raj Kapoor. Then who has the audacity to sing it on the screen ? Well, the bullock cart driver who carries Raj kapoor on his cart sings it. And it is no character artist. Look closely, it is Mukesh himself who is the bullock card driver and who sings this song on screen.

Shri 420 was a musical blockbuster which was full of wonderful songs. Most songs were sung by Mukesh on Raj Kapoor, but there was one wonderful comedy song sung by Manna Dey for Raj Kapoor.

It is a cute comedy song. The melody of this song keeps you mesmerised as many times as you listen to it. I have listened to this song about a dozen time already, and my dil maange more.

“Naseeb” was supposed to be a sequel of “Amar Akbar Anthony” with the same cast of brothers. But unfortunately Vinod Khanna was into following Acharya Rajneesh those days and so he had to be replaced by Shatrughan Sinha. Amitabh and Rishi Kapoor continued from the previous movie as did Pran from the previous movie as their father.

As if bringing together a big star cast of leading stars was not enough, the song “John Jaani Janardan” brings together a galaxy of other current and retired filmstars of Bollywood. In fact this song has been aped in the 2008 movie “Om Shanti Om” too, though not with the same effect.
