John Jaani Janardan tara rum pum pum pum pum

Posted on: September 4, 2008

“Naseeb” was supposed to be a sequel of “Amar Akbar Anthony” with the same cast of brothers. But unfortunately Vinod Khanna was into following Acharya Rajneesh those days and so he had to be replaced by Shatrughan Sinha. Amitabh and Rishi Kapoor continued from the previous movie as did Pran from the previous movie as their father.

As if bringing together a big star cast of leading stars was not enough, the song “John Jaani Janardan” brings together a galaxy of other current and retired filmstars of Bollywood. In fact this song has been aped in the 2008 movie “Om Shanti Om” too, though not with the same effect.

This scene was a dream come true paisa wasool scene for many movie goers. In fact, the entire movie was a paisa wasool movie for aam janta, provided one did not use too much of brain while looking for logic in the movie.

The song begins with Amitabh multitasking (serving drinks, singing “John Jaani Janardan” , catching a pickpocket, juggling his tray plus glasses attached to the tray without breaking or dropping anything, persuading stars to play musical instruments, dancing etc, etc. Phew !).

I tried to identify the celebrities who make their entry during the song playing themselves.

First to walk in is Randhir Kapoor flanked by two ladies. Next is Rakesh Roshan. Next to come in is Vijay Arora ( looked like Deepak Parashar to me for quite some time). I could not recognise the ladies accompanying these two relatively small time actors.

Then the big star Dharmendra walks in. His huge cut outs from Dharam Veer, the last Man Mohan Desai movie was visible in the background. In fact, it seems that this song was picturised on the occasion of celebrating the success of Dharam Veer.

Then it is the turn of Shammi Kapoor flanked by two ladies. Then Rajesh Khanna arrives, accompanied by who I thought was his wife. Last but not the least, it is Raj Kapoor, accompanied by who I thought was his wife.

Rajesh Khanna touches Raj Kapoor’ s feet (sort of), and then Raj Kapoor walks down to Dharmendra and hugs him. Amitabh brings a piano accordian to Raj Kapoor requesting him to play it. Raj Kapoor refuses, but persistence of Amitabh plus insistence by Randhir, Shammi etc finally makes Raj Kapoor relent.

Some remarks about the ladies appearing besides the actors. For long I thought that they were the spouses of the stars. But I was having my doubts. For instance, the lady coming with Rajesh Khanna hardly looked like Dimple. She looked more like Anju Mahendroo, his ex fiancee. And then it hit me. She was none other than Sharmila Tagore, in a hairstyle that must have been the fashion those days.

And the lady arriving with Raj Kapoor was Mala Sinha. Gosh! She had become so heavy from her “Anpadh” and “Aankhen” days. Shammi Kapoor arrived with two ladies. One was Waheeda Rahman, and the other seemed like the actress who plays his wife in the movie “Khoon Paseena”.

Randheer Kapoor came with Bindu and another lady, who looked like Neetu Singh, but then I later concluded that she was Simple Kapadia. Dharmendra arrived with Simi Garewal, who wore her trademark whites even in those days.

Youngsters , who have seen Rakesh Roshan only with his bald head , may wonder if he was wearing a wig in those days. No, he did have long flowing hairs those days. What was Vijay Arora doing in that party? I am not aware if he even got any roles those days.It could well be Deepak Parashar, who was making a name for himself those days, but it did not look like Deepak Parashar, so it could well be Vijay Arora himself. Rakesh Roshan managed to find roles in small budget movies. Randhir Kapoor, with strings of flops behind him, was all but out of movies. Shammi Kapoor was making a comeback, having appeared in “Khoon Paseena”, and was due to appear in “Vidhaata”. Raj Kapoor was still directing and making movies those days. Rajesh Khanna, the superstar before Amitabh was trying hard to make a comeback. He acted in some very well made movies, and would receive critical acclaim for his movies, but his superstar days were behind him.

There were some people, especially ladies, whom I could not identify. There was one lady in red ( like most males of my generation, I only understand red, green and blue- this colur could have been pink, purple, magenta etc as well), who arrives with Vijay Arora. She was definitely a celebrity seeing how she joins others on the dance floor. Who was she ? Komilla Virk perhaps, who was a vamp those days ? Similarly, who was the lady in white who accompanied Rakesh Roshan ? Anyone can help in identifying these and other unidentified celebrities in this song ?. P. S.- After repeated views, I have identified Rakesh Roshan’s companion as Shoma Narayan.

The stars dance towards the end of the song. And it is funny to see who does what. Mala Sinha is the most enthusiastic. Most celebrities just move round and clap their hands in what passes for a dance. Dhramendra is all at sea on the dance floor.

This galaxy of stars gracing this song makes this song a landmark song in Bollywood history. The song itself was sung by Rafi. Kishore Kumar tended to sing for Amitabh those days, but here Rafi has done a wonderful job. He has really sung the song with passion.

The lyrics of Anand Bakshi describe the scene so well, and the tune of Laxmikant Pyarelal celebrates the festive occasion so well. But the biggest applause should go to the person who thought up this scene and who directed this scene. This song is quite a milestone in Bollywood history, as I have already mentioned earlier.

Incidentally, Rafi sang for Rishi Kapoor in another song in this movie. Also, Shailendra Singh sang for Amitabh in that other song. Confusing ? It certainly is. But for now, let us enjoy this humdinger of a song.

Hi atul

The history behind this song is that Manmohan Desai wanted all the stars which had acted in his earlier films to share screen space .Showman that he was, he pulled it off ,in form of this song. From Raj kapoor, whom Man directed in Chhalia, his debut as director to the previous movie dharamveer , he had them all.

At 2:36 we can spot Dev Kumar and Mohan Choti. Shammi Kapoor enters with Waheda Rehman and Indrani Mukherjee who played Ranima in Dharam Veer.
where this song scores over the song from “Om Shanti Om” IMHO is that it shows all the stars interacting with each other and teh camaraderie between them. the song in OSO is good by itself but shows only the Bandra boys intereacting with each other. even there Amir Khan is missing which is made up by the prescence of Saif Ali Khan.
