When I was young, listening to songs on radio (and specially on Radio Ceylon) was a much looked forward to activity by younsters and grown ups alike. Like always, parents frowned on this activity, because in their opinion, kids should concentrate on their studies, instead of such morally corrupt activities like watching movies and listening to their music. 🙂

Here is a rare song from an obscure movie that I heard for the first time only recently. Though the song is more than six decades old, it sounds so refreshing and timeless even today.

When I looked at the lyrics of the song, I thought that it was the song sung by Rafi that begins with the words- “Jiyaa ho jiyaa ho jiyaa kuchh bol to”, but I was wrong, I was confusing the title song of “Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1961) with the title song of “Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai”(1967). “Samaadhi”(1950) was a movie starring Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaiwant. Few people today may be bothered about its story, but what songs this movie had ! Absolutely timess songs and a few of them in fact continue to influence Hindi movie songs even today. For instance, the song Gore gore o baanke chhore(Samadhi) is still popular among musical plagiarists for their remixing. When it comes to a patriotic song,Kadam kadam badhaaye jaa (Samadhi) is as iconic as they come.

“Man Mandir” (1971), which is a new movie by the standards of this blog, starred Waheeda Rehman and Sanjeev Kumar. This movie, by most indications was a flop. This movie had some nice songs in it, though, which were popular at that time. I loved these songs though at that time I was not aware that those songs were from this movie. I have already discussed two such songs from this movie in this blog.
