“Agnipareeksha” (1981) was a B R Films Production movie. It was produced by B R Chopra and directed by Kamal Majumdar. The movie had Amol Palekar, Rameshwari, Parikshath Sahni, Veena, Utpal Dutt, Iftekar, Dr.Sri Raam Lagoo, S.N.Bannerjee, Nana Palsikar, Jagadish Raj, Dinesh Thakur, JankiDass, Prem Sagar, Dev Dutt, Sunil Dhawan, Master Danny, Amol Sen, Pravin Khanna, Maher, Dev Sharma, Sundar Taneja, Satya Banerjee, Heeraji, Navin Kumar, Gaikwad etc in it.

“Sunayna” (1979) was a Rajshri Productions movie which was inspired from Charlie Chaplin’s movie The citylights(1931). Charlie Chaplin’s movie was a silent movie even though the era of talkies has begun. Hindi movies cannot be silent by any stretch of imagination. And this movie had some lovely songs in it,including Naseeruddin Shah (playing Charlie Chaplin’s role) singing a romantic song(Sunayna sunayna..aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho) for his lady love.

Experienced music lovers can often identify the music director by listening to the music of a song. Most music directors have their “signature” tunes that differentiate them from others. So most of the time one can identify a tune as being a tune of Naushad, O P Nayyar, Madan Mohan, S D Burman, Roshan, Shankar Jaikishan, Laxmikant Pyarelal etc.

“Dulhan wah jo piya man bhaaye” (1977) was a runaway hit of the year. In fact, this was a bigger hit than “Sholay” in the city where I was growing up.

“Dulhan wahi jo piya man bhaaye” was not a mainstream movie. It was a movie made by Rajshree productions and as was their wont, there were no big names in this movie.

Rajshri productions had hit upon a sureshot formula for success in the decade of 1970s. They would make movies for a small target audience who wanted to watch love stories full of nice songs and heartwarming plots. This was a winning formula because love stories by definition required new faces ( and as such Rajshri Productions saved money on hiring big name actors). In these movies, story and music were the real stars and Rajshri productions had built up a small loyal audience for their movies.
