In the last 7 songs (today’s song is the 8th song) of this film, almost every aspect of the film, songs and the artists working in it have been discussed. Today we will discuss something which is close to my heart, from this film. Today’s song is sung by one of my favourite singers of Hindi Cinema – GEETA DUTT. Some of our readers must be knowing that there is a site called http://www.geetadutt.com, run by some of her ardent admirers. A few years ago, on their request, I had written an article on Geeta Dutt, on her Death Anniversary, for their site.

Today’s song is from the film Ratnadeep-1952.

One, to make films to entertain the local audience and two, to enter the Hindi cinema market spread throughout the Indian subcontinent. Film makers found a way for this. Films were made in two languages simultaneously-the Local language and the Hindi version.

This post is coming two days late. Talat Sb’s anniversary of passing away was two days ago (9th May). In preparation and delayed, this post remembers Talat Sb, the velvet voiced wonder who is one of the mainstays of the fond memories of the golden age of Hindi film  music – an era when melody was the queen.

A rare and opportune gathering of talented stars, singers, music makers and writers once came together at the coordinates of a place called Bombay (now Mumbai).  Fortune has a timing of its own, and blessed are those who witnessed this gathering, and also those who continue to enjoy their creations and their histrionics. An august assembly that pulled together in 1940s, it continued gathering momentum along with the fervor of the newly independent India.

Today, 4th October, is the 88th birthday of Sandhya Mukherjee. The grand old dame is one of the premier playback singers in Bangla cinema. Many have sung Meera bhajans – from classical greats like M.S. Subbulakshmi to Bollywood greats such as Lata Mangeshkar … and so many in between – and to their credit. But for me, Juthika Roy’s vocals and expression seem to be made for Meera bhajans. Her Meera numbers touch even my atheist heart!
