“Waqt” (1965) was the first multi starrer Hindi movie of the golden era. It had several leading stars of the time namely Sunil Dutt,Sadhana,Raj Kumar,Sharmila Tagore,Shashi Kapoor,Balraj sahni,Achla Sachdev etc. The story line, that had the big family of Balraj Sahni separating in an earthquake, only to meet again towards the end, may look hackneyed now, but it was a novelty those days.In fact, it was the story of this movie that led to multi-starrers, as well as lost and found movies of 1970s.

When I was a young boy I never quite understood why a movie was often referred to with the director’s name attached to it. For example, people would talk about Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand or Bawarchi or Shakti Samanta’s Aradhana. For me these were movies of Rajesh Khanna first and foremost. Yet they would invariably be attached to the director, as if he owned the movie.

“Kaajal” (1965) was a movie starring Raj Kumar, Meena Kumari, Dharmendra, Padmini etc. When I went to a movie hall in 1970s to watch this movie, I had no inkling about this movie and its songs. But when the movie began, and its songs arrived one after the other, I and other members of the audience gasped. Wow, this song is from this movie ! oh, this song is from this movie too ! And this song also ! Unbelievable, this song too !
