Today (1 october) is the birth anniversary of Majrooh Sultanpuri (1 october 1919 – 24 may 2000), who was easily the most prolific lyricist during the golden era of Hindi movie music. Born as Asrar Ul Hasan Khan, Majrooh Sultanpuri began his career as a lyricist in 1946 with “Shahjahaan” (1946). He must have got along well with almost all music directors, seeing that he worked with most music directors of the golden era.

“Bandini” (1963) was a movie based on pre independence days when Indian was still under British occupation. “Bandini” (1963) is the story of Nutan who is serving jail sentence in a jail. The jail also has a freedom fighter who is to be hanged. This song is sung by the freedom fighter as he is being led to the gallows.

On the occasion of Kishore Kumar’s birth anniversary on August 4th, the wheel of time(kalchakra) takes me back to my teens when I used to listen to Radio Ceylon’s programme on old Hindi film songs. On the first day of every month, the first song that was played on this programme was din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai from the film ‘Pahli Taarikh’ (1954). That was the time when I came to know about Kishore Kumar as a singer. It was a revelation to me later from the film ‘New Delhi’ (1956) that he was not only a singer but an actor also. With his many subsequent films in 50s and early 60s, I had taken it for granted that he was a comedian who sang mostly fun songs and that too for himself.

Today (1 August) is Meena Kumari’s (1 August 1932- 31 march 1972) birth anniversary. She achieved so much despite passing away so young. Incredibly, she had a thirty year long acting career beginning from the age of seven ! She acted in nearly ninety movies. She began to act in adult roles from 1949 onwards and her breakthrough came in 1952 with “Baiju Baawra” (1952). She won the inaugural Filmfare best actress award for this performance.
