The name of SN Tripathi evokes fond memories of melody and good music amongst avid HF music lovers. He was a multitalented personality who contributed to composing, singing, acting, storytelling, direction, screenplay writing, filmmaking etc.

Despite contributions in many fields of film making, he is best known as a music director. He gave music to mainly B grade mythological and historical movies, but these movies had A grade songs for us to cherish.

‘Jaadoo Nagri’ (1961) was produced by Ram Dayal under the banner of Mukul Pictures and was directed by Radhakant. Cast included Ranjan, Vijaya Chowdhary, Ramayan Tiwari, Helen, Majnu, Kammo, Shammi, Mridula, Tuntun etc. The VCD of the film is available online but quality of both the video and audio is not good. A feature of this ‘black and white’ film is that all the songs have been picturised in colour.

Today (1 March 2025) is the 83rd birthday of Indrani Mukherjee (born on March 01, 1942). I have watched some of her 1960s’ films mostly having pious and graceful roles. She was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in a Bengali Brahmin family. Her father was a doctor and her mother, a housewife. She did her early schooling in Allahabad and completed her high school studies in Kolkata. From her childhood, she was interested in Hindi films.

‘Bidesiyaa’ (1963) was the second film in Bhojpuri dialect which was produced by Bachhubhai Shah and was directed by S N Tripathi who also acted in a supporting role beside the music director of the film. The cast included Naaz and Sujit Kumar in lead roles with the supporting cast of Jeevan, Sheel Kumar, Padma Khanna, Sadhana Chowdhary, Sulochana Chatterjee, S N Tripathi, Helen, Bela Bose, Rani etc. The story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics were written by Rammurti Chaturvedi.

In the 1960s through 1970s, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium at Worli (Opposite Haji Ali) used to host free-style wrestling bouts. Dara Singh, Randhawa, Tiger Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh etc among the Indians and some foreign wrestlers like King Kong used to participate in the bouts. Most wrestling bouts used to take place on Saturdays/Sundays and probably one during the weekdays. Large life size cut-outs of the famous wrestlers used to be displayed at the venue as well as some prominent places. In addition, huge posters of wrestling bouts used to be displayed on hand pulled carts (Haathh Gaadi) which will move from one place to other. Thousands of leaflets of advertisement of the wrestling bouts used to be distributed at prominent places like railway stations, bus stands and other crowded places.
