Long ago during weddings in the family, couple of my aunts who were fond of singing, would start this singing session, among ladies. There were a few peppy songs, but I am remmbering a couple of songs now like ‘chhod baabul ka ghar mohe pi ke nagar’ from Baabul’ (1950) and ‘baalam se milan hogaa sharmaane ke din aaye’ from ‘ Chaudhvi ka chand ‘. They would sing it in chorus in Shamshad Begum style. They probabaly had no inkling that the song from Baabul is a sad song, and song from ‘Chaudhvi ka chand’ is by Geeta Dutt.

Among the singers of devotional songs, one name that comes to my mind is Lakshmi Shankar. It was almost a daily ritual for me to listen to one of her devotional (bhajan) songs almost every day in the morning on All India Radio, Bombay (Mumbai). At that time, I had no inkling that she was a classical dancer and later a renowned classical vocalist of Patiala Gharana. I was not even aware that she belonged to the illustrious Shankar family.

Greetings all for the celebration of Ram Navami today, the anniversary of the birth of Lord Ram. Ram is one of the many incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the Preserver and the Sustainer of this universe. Today’s celebration is one of the most ancient festivals celebrated in India. The date of Ram Navami can be traced back to the pre-Christian era. References to this celebration can be found in many of our scriptures. In Hindu religion, it is considered to one of the five major sacred festivals and it is said that, properly observing this fast leads to the attainment of salvation.
