A tongue in cheek song, if ever there was one. The first line itself suggests that this one is going to be a very very interesting song. Recorded sometimes late 30s or so, this is a gem of a song from the pen of Pt. Madhur. What a pace and a rhythm, reminds one of, ‘aayee bahaar aaj aayee bahaar’.

In the 1920s and 30s, and also later, Pankaj Babu’s affinity for Rabindra Sangeet has had a significant influence in making this music form popular with the general public. He had made a choice of music as his calling in life, at a very early age, and although he joined college, but he did not go ahead with higher education. He first became a student of the noted musician Durgadas Bannerjee, and then later studied music under Dinendranath Tagore. Dinendranath or Dinu Thakur, as he was popularly called, is the grandson of Rabindranath Tagore’s eldest brother, Dipendranath Tagore. This association brought Pankaj Babu into the culturally rich environment of the Jorasanko Thakur Bari, the ancestral home of the Tagore family. It had an everlasting influence on him, and the influence of this culture is visible in all his works.

The innovator in Pankaj Babu has been responsible for some very remarkable additions to the sound and music aspect of the film industry. He was probably the first music arranger and orchestra conductor to introduce the use of western musical forms and instruments in the music for films in India. He is credited with introducing the use of instruments like piano and accordion, in the music compositions for Hindi and Bengali films that he worked on.

Pankaj Babu’s last association with Hindi film world was in 1954. After the film Kasturi, in 1954 he did not work for any more Hindi films. His association with the Bengali cinema lasted for some more years, till 1972, beyond which he was content with the peace, and with teaching music. The Padam Shri award for this remarkable musician came in 1970, followed in 1972 by Dada Saheb Phalke award for lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema.

“Raahgeer” (1969), also spelt “Rahgir” is a forgotten movie even though it is a “recent” movie by the standads of this blog. This movie was a Geetanjali Chitradeep production and it was directed by Tarun Majumdar. This movie had Biswjeet, Nirupa Roy, Asit sen,Sandhya Roy,Basantha/vasantha Chowdhury,Shashikala, Padma Chauhan,Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Master Prasenjit,Ifthekar, Kanhaiyyalal etc in it.

“Panghat” (1943) is a Prakash pictures movie which was produced by Vijay Bhatt and directed by K J Parmar and Mahesh Chandra. There was not much known about this movie, but thanks to Mr Arunkumar’s comments about this movie in another song of “Panghat”, we now have a good idea about the story of this movie as well as about the actors.

“Khandan” (1942) ,a Dalsukh Pancholi production, was one of the biggest movies in Hindi movie industry when it was released in 1942. This movie was inspired from the movie “East Lynne” (1931) which in turn was based on a 1861 novel of the same name written by Ellen Wood. This movie dealt with a topic that was considered quite sensational at that time.
