Hullo Atuldom
There is a test match on, ‘Down Under’, and I am recalling the words of Sunny Gavaskar. He had hosted a short tele-series in the late 80s. He had also written his autobiography “Sunny Days”.
What I am quoting here and often prior to today, is something that I have read in “Sunny Days” or heard it on the said serial. It could also be Sunny Gavaskar in his avatar as a commentator. His advice to the batsmen used to be that “One should always reach the milestone of say a 50 or 100 with a four, six or at the most run two runs. This would cover up for any score that the scorer had inadvertently credited to extras”. Possibly this may have been due to his experiences at the start of his career when scorers used to do their work manually.
My reason for quoting Sunny Bhai (as he is sometimes addressed by his co-commentators) is that it has been a while since my last post, that had been a milestone for me. And following Sunnybhai’s advice my quick single (next post) should have come a few days back. But that has not been. I had many posts in mind for various birthdays and anniversaries but I have been away. But, as the elders say ‘better late than never’.
So coming to today’s post it is to wish an actor who is blessed with a good voice almost equaling Amitabh Bachchan’s baritone, a good height again almost equal to Mr. Bachchan and looks that far surpasses many of his contemporaries. He was born in Quetta in present day Pakistan a year before independence, educated in Hyderabad (in India) and was a Tennis and Swimming champion.
His career in the entertainment industry began with Radio Shows (which he got thanks to his voice) and stage plays. He is also trained at FTII. On relocating to Mumbai his experience on radio and stage kept him going and his looks helped him gain modelling assignments; I remember him in ads for ‘Lifebouy soap’ and also ‘Charminar cigarettes’. His Bollywood debut happened in 1977 with “Jeewan Mukt” but it was his role in “Laawaaris” as a potter that is my first recall of him. Hope that rings a bell in the mind of the readers.
Yes, I am speaking of the National Award winning, still handsome Suresh Oberoi. He turns a year older today. He has done a few romantic roles too in his career which are overshadowed by the character roles he has played. We can recall him as ‘Mukhi’ in “Mirch Masaala”, the tormentor in “Coolie”,”Shraddhanjali”, etc. He has played an inspector in a number of movies and may be holding the record for the third highest by an actor after Jagdish Raj and Iftikaar. 🙂
Today’s song is from the 1982 released, Satyen Bose directed “Tumhare Bina”. It had Suresh Oberoi and Swaroop Sampat playing a couple and parents to a little boy. He is a film producer whose wife is suspicious of his relation with a beautiful actress (Simple Kapadia). The couple separate and Robin Dutt (Suresh Oberoi) is forced to abduct his son, go into hiding etc. The movie had songs penned by Govind Moonis and tuned by Raam Laxman. Bhupinder Singh, Behroz Chatterjee (never heard this name before), Manhar Udhas, and Gurpreet Kaur (not heard this name too) were the playback singers used. Apparently the movie was a remake of Kramer v/s Kramer.
Today we have a song which shows that Suresh Oberoi would have made a good romantic hero too. It is duet by Bhupinder and Behroz Chatterjee.
