I always liked to see films. The first choice was fighting films, the second was films with good songs, the third Religious films and so on….
In my dictionary, ” Fighting Film ” means any film which has any type of fighting, like War film, Cowboy film, Stunt/action film, spy films etc. In this too, priority were assigned to them, viz.
Priority No | Type of action movie |
---|---|
1 | Stunt/ action films |
2 | Cowboy films |
3 | War films |
4 | Spy films |
etc | etc |
I liked to see Religious films too, mainly for their Trick scenes, wonderful costumes, Big palaces and sets and an inherent liking for mythology.
Now that our Stunt/Action film series is coming to an end,my next series may well be Religious films…may be…
Before the likes of Dara Singh, Randhava, Azad and others of their kind came on the scene, the action films were populated by a set of people ably led by master Vithal, master Bhagwan, Fearless Nadia and in the 50s it was KAMRAN.
It was a delight to see Kamran’s or Ranjan’s action films for that matter. Ranjan who was from Madras, was an acknowledged Fencing expert(sword fighting), however Kamran depended more on his hands and Pistols.
Speciality of Kamran’s films was the well knit storylines. Kamran never started any film without a full and completed screenplay. Thus his films were no-nonsense films unlike the ” take it as it comes” stories.
Unfortunately not much information is available about Kamran. I tried to get an appointment with Sajid Khan and Farah Khan, through one of my contacts, but they are so busy these days that they can not spare even 2-3 hours for their dear father’s biography !
Kamran Khan was married to Menaka, sister of Honey and Daisy Irani. In the later days, they separated but the Irani sisters took good care of Kamran’s children, according to Farah Khan.
Kamran was staying in Versova area of Mumbai, where I too reside. This area is full of old time actors or their relatives. We used to see Sajid Khan conducting and compering a ‘Housie’ or Tambolo game on the local cable network. Now ofcourse they have become big names in Bollywood.
Coming back to stunt films of the 30s through 50s, I find very strange names of actors working in such films. here are a few as examples-
Bajar Battu, Phoolkumari, Maruti pehelwan, Bataata, Mitthoo Miyaan, Fatty Prasad, Boken Chattu, Minu the Mystic, Manchi Tuthi, Gareeb Raja, Kurbaan Jaoon, Pandit Dukhi, Vilayatu, Loveji Lavangiya, Adam Sandow, Sandow Safar, Dunlop, Chic Chak and a very strange name CHEMIST ! This name is found in 5-6 films.
For want of recorded authentic information on Kamran, even his complete Filmography is not available. However his name is first found in film ASHA-1938, in the HFGK. According to one source he acted in more that 100 films. Some of his films were, Asha, Sumitra, Mallika Salomi, Jasoos, Sair e Paristaan, Wrong Number, Toofani Teerandaz, Chini jaadugar, Laalach, Do Dost, Black Rider, Arab ka sitara, Aflatoon, Mr.Toofan, Faulad, Khush Naseeb, Aisa bhi hota hai etc.
Kamran Khan also produced some films(probably 15 films).
It is very sad that people who are very close to old time actors are themselves not helping to record their life stories for posterity, when some dedicated workers are ready to spare time for such efforts.
Kamran Khan was a very good looking and a strong person. I must have seen atleast 8-10 films of Kamran.
Today we will hear a nice lilting song by Geeta dutt from his film-
SAIR-E-PARISTAN-1958 was produced by H. Nandkishore and directed by A M Khan. It had music by Suresh-Talwar. The cast was Kamran, Chitra, Amarnath, Manju, Ram singh, Rafiq, Ansari etc.
The story line was-
Laka is the king of the magic World. He is so proud that he has ordered that in his kingdom, only HE should be worshipped and not even God. Those who worship God would be burnt alive. His daughter princess Shabnam falls in love with a God fearing prince Kokab. Shabnam’s friend Nagma brings Kokab to her Palace and they together engage in God’s worship. This news goes to the queen mother and she erders the arrest of all three. Laka is furious that his own daughter worships God. He sentences all of them to be burnt alive. Next day when they are thrown in the burning fire, the fire becomes cool ice and they are saved. Laka is more angry. He orders Kokab to be thrown off a Mountain. There also Kokab is saved. Kokab goes to the people and preaches about worshipping God and nor Laka.
Laka tries everything to kill them but they are saved. Suddenly Laka gets paralysis and he can not move. The court astrologer tells that only the juice of the fruits from Paristan can save Laka.
Kokab and Shabnam start for Paristan. They face many difficulties, monsters, magicians etc, but finally they get the fruits and return to kingdom.
After drinking the juice Laka gets alright. Now he realises that no one is greater than God !
Song-Hauley hauley doley (Sair e Paristan)(1958) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Suresh Talwar
Chorus
Lyrics
hauley hauley doley
dheere dhhere boley
hauley hauley doley
dheere dhhere boley
mast umar mein
nayi lahar mein
dil ye khaaye hichkoley
aahaa
zalim tera ishaara hai
teri nazar ne maara hai
jo bhi hai zamaane mein
jaadu sabhi tumhaara hai
kisko pata hai bekhabar
tujhmein hai kitna asar
hansne lage zindagi
phere jidhar tu nazar
hauley hauley doley
dheere dhhere boley
hauley hauley doley
dheere dhhere boley
mast umar mein
nayi lahar mein
dil ye khaaye hichkoley
aahaa
zalim tera ishaara hai
teri nazar ne maara hai
jo bhi hai zamaane mein
jaadu sabhi tumhaara hai
jalwe tere hi to hain
hamaare hain andaaz mein
teri hi aawaaz hai
har naghma har saaz mein
hauley hauley doley
dheere dhhere boley
hauley hauley doley
dheere dhhere boley
mast umar mein
nayi lahar mein
dil ye khaaye hichkoley
aahaa
zalim tera ishaara hai
teri nazar ne maara hai
jo bhi hai zamaane mein
jaadu sabhi tumhaara hai

This tune reminds of ‘Ina Mina Dika’, as well as of OP!
Most of the songs of Kamran’s films have OP touch & Kamran’s last film ‘Aisa bhi Hota Hain’ had OP as composer!

According to a couple of sources, the one above linked by me and another YouTube video, the composer was Nikhil Ghosh around 1954. It was a non-filmi song, it seems.

Thanks and my apologies. I just saw the name of the song and thought that they were the same.
