A mast mast song from 1970s, that had everyone dancing on their feet. The song is great, sung wonderfully by Kishore and Lata, and it has a characteristic foot tapping music by R D Burman. It was filmed on the reigning heart throbs Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. And let us not forget the lyrics. It is the lyrics of Anand Bakshi, so simple, so effective, and so easy to sing that has made this song one of the perennial favourites for most Bollywood music lovers.

Mumtaz, as usual, is full of spontaneity, bubbly enthusiasm and gay abandon. Presence of Mumtaz enhances the pleasure of watching the song.

Rajesh Khanna, no great shakes as a dancer, shakes his leg in a characteristic way. He would bend slightly forward, and rotate haltingly on his feet once or twice, and would also move unsteadily forward and back, all this while his right hand would be raised skyward. In all, he gave the appearance of a lattoo (Top) trying to rotate on its axis, but falling away after two rotations. But he was the reigning superstar, and even this mannerism had spawned millions of admirers trying to dance the same ungainly way in those days.

A genuinely feel good song, that has not aged one bit, nor looks like doing so. And this song rightly deserves its evergreen stature.

Kaanta lage na kankar

Kaanta lage na kankar

ek ke do do ke chaar mujhko to dikhate hain
aisaa hi hota hai jab do dil milte hain
ek ke do do ke chaar mujhko to dikhate hain
aisaa hi hotaa hai jab do dil milte hain
sar pe zameen paanv ke neeche hai aasamaan, ho~
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!

jay jay Shiv Shankar
Kaanta lage na kankar

jo toone mujhe thaam na liyaa
ho sau Rab dii!

O Bansi Bhaiyya..
He He He..

Ho More Raja
Bade Jatna Se
Seenchun re teri phulwaari re..

kandhe pe sar rakh ke tum mujhko sone do
mastii mein jo chaahe ho jaaye hone do
kandhe pe sar rakh ke tum mujhko sone do
mastii mein jo chaahe ho jaaye hone do
aise mein tum ho gaye ho bade beimaan, ho~
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!

hurr
jay jay Shiv Shankar
Kaanta lage na kankar
ke pyaalaa tere naam kaa piyaa
ho~ gir jaaungi, main mar jaaungi
jo toone mujhe thaam na liyaa
ho sau Rab dii!

raste mein ham dono ghar kaise jaayenge
ghar vaale ab hamko khud lene aayenge
raste mein ham dono ghar kaise jaayenge
ghar vaale ab hamko khud lene aayenge
kuchh bhi ho lekin mazaa aa gayaa merii jaan, ho~
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!
sau Rab dii!

jay jay Shiv Shankar
Kaanta lage na kankar
ke pyaalaa tere naam kaa piyaa
ho~ gir jaaungi, main mar jaaungi
jo toone mujhe thaam na liyaa
ho sau Rab dii!

Arre bajao re bajao, imaandaari se bajao

Translation

It is very difficult to translate a song like this into English.Still, he is my non literal translation of the key lines.

Hail Shiv hail Shankar
Let us be safe from danger
I imbibed some on your name
I swear on God

I may fall down, I may hurt myself
unless you stop me from falling by holding me

I see two for one and four for two
That is what happens when two hearts meet
There is ground over my head and sky beneath my feet
I swear on God

Let me lie down with my head resting on your shoulder
Let things take their own course, as they may like to take
Under these circumstances, your intentions do not appear honourable to me

with our condition like this, how will we go home
Do not worry, they will come and take us home

Whatever it was,but it was great fun,my dear

Boy, this song was very very popular.
I don’t know about its Binaca Geetmala ranking but if that is a ranking of popularity among the masses, this deserved to be #1.

Personally, and each person of course has his own preference, from this movie I liked “karvatey badaltey rahen” more. And “zindagi ke safar mein”. But that is just me !

There was however very good chemistry between Rajesh and Mumtaz and I think this song exemplifies it very well. That is part of the success of this song, according to me.

You know what ? Unlike later day actresses who changed their dresses many times during a song, Mumtaz would be shown in just one dress throughout the song ( typically yellow or orange or pink in colour). In fact, I recalla rain song and even there she was seen singing in the same single dress. The actresses of those days did not have too many dresses,I suppose.;)

Was just going through these earlier posts of yours, Atul, and wanted to say how much I LOVE this song. Peppy, full of joie de vivre, and I actually like the goofy, non ‘over-choreographed’ dancing–so natural in portraying the fun they’re having 🙂 Here’s another anecdote from Rajesh Khanna about the genesis of this song.

“Yet another instance, we were at a Shivji mandir-darshan somewhere in Kashmir. After listening to the clanging of temple bells during the aarti, we came out and RD instantly hummed a devotional hook line with a folksy flavour. This time, he assured me that he would gift the melody to me. That vibrant duet-song was much later recorded as ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ from the movie Aap Ki Kasam. Many a time, he would use the whistle-effect or la-la-la in some of his songs as he felt that the common man could whistle his melodies, even without memorising the lyrics,” recalls Khanna.”

Thanks for this lovely background information. Reading my own comments including the traslation of this song two years later is an interesting experience.

Superb song . Won the hearts of masses . I am providing a trivia pertaining to the song . The picturization of the song took much longer time , the director of the film J Om Prakash was perturbed as cost were going high . He approached the unit and told them to fasten the proceedins , emphasizing the fact it had already incurred him fifty thousand rupees . Kishorda also heard this . Being jovial in nature he included ” bajaao bajaao imaandaari se bajaao pachaas hazaar ka sawaal hai ” in the end of the song . ” Pachaas Hazaar Ka Sawaal Hai ” was the creation of Kishoreda . Interestingly , it went unnoticed .
The above trivia was quoted by Annual Kapoor in ” Suhaana Safar with Annual Kapoor ” on Big FM .

I heard this very same trivia on a youtube video that SaReagaMa Caravan has under “platinum song of the day”.
