Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hai mere paas to aa

Posted on: October 25, 2008

In Bollywood movies of 1960s and 70s, there were certain hit formulas that were adopted by all movie makers without fail. One of the hit formulas was a cabaret song by Helen. I have not counted them, but I am sure there are many such cabaret songs performed by Helen. Quite a few of them have been very popular during their time and some can even be called to have become timeless and evergreen.

Here is one such cabaret song from a 1967 movie called “Shikar” where Sanjeev Kumar is the hero and Helen performs this number to seduce the hero. One can notice parallels with “ye mera dil pyaar ka deewana” number in “Don” that was picturised one decade later.

Music is by Shankar jaikishan and the song was written by Hasrat Jaipuri. I notice that there are just eight sentences in this song which are sung repeatedly to make it into a full song lasting 4 minutes. This must be one of the smallest songs in Bollywood, as far as the number of unique sentences in the song are concerned.

And the song, as was the case with all songs of such genre, was sung by Asha Bhonsle.

Song- Hai mere paas to aa (Shikaar) (1968) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Hasrat Jaipuri, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai

kidhar bhi ik nazar kar le mere manchahe parwane
ghadi aisi na aayegi kahan khoya hai deewane
ghadi aisi na aayegi kahan khoya hai deewane
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai

pade hain ham bhi raaho me mita le jitna jee chhahe
sitam bhi tere pyare hain sata le jitna jee chhahe
sitam bhi tere pyare hain sata le jitna jee chhahe
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai

machalta hai dile nadaan nahin maane badi mushkil
kahan tak tujhko samjhaaun mera banjaa mere kaatil
kahan tak tujhko samjhaaun mera banjaa mere kaatil
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
Hai mere pass to aa kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai
aankh se aankh to mila kidhar khayal hai

Thanks, Atul for posting this farmaish of mine.
I did not realise that there are such few unique lines in this song.
The song itself is quite catchy. I mean, if you listen to it a couple of times, you begin to hum it for the rest of the day. At least I know I do. 🙂

Helen must have done so many dances in the 60s. In those days, a dance number from her was a must for the movie, regardless of who the hero/heroine were or what the plot was.

This movie has a better known Asha Bhonsle song too. I am sure you know which one.
