Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Bechain nazar betaab jigar

Posted on: November 22, 2008

This song is a C Ramchandra composition. For the singer Talat Mahmood, this is a different kind of song. This song can be regarded as Talat Mahmood’s version of a fun timepass song.

This song, as usual sung softly and gingerly by Talat Mahmood is quite a popular song even today. This is testimony to the calibre of Talat Mahmood’s voice, Jaan Nissar Akhtar’s lyrics and C Ramchandra’s music that this song has become an immortal Talat Mahmood song.

The picturisation certainly shows that it was a fun song. The actor plays on his fiddle ( like Nero is reputed to have done at Rome) and hopefully without there being any fire in his Sheikhdom. His assistant ( chamcha? sidekick? ) shows nifty footwork while playing on his fiddle and dancing to the tune.

Frankly, I had no idea that one used to dance while playing the fiddle. Who knows, the producer of this movie must have seen guitar being played while dancing, and he replaced fiddle instead of guitar, and retained the dance.

And I must say, this video is worth a watch, and the audio is ofcourse an evergreen Talat Mehmood classic song.

Song- Bechain nazar betaab jigar (Yasmeen) (1955) Singer- Talat Mehmood, Lyrics- Jaan Nissar Akhtar, MD- C Ramchandra

Lyrics

bechain nazar betaab jigar
ye dil hai kisika deewaana hay deewaana
bechain nazar betaab jigar
ye dil hai kisika deewaana hay deewaana
kab shaam ho aur wo shamma jale
kab ud kar pahunche parwaana hay parwaana

hai dil ka chaman khilne ke liye
aayega koyi milne ke liye
hai dil ka chaman khilne ke liye
aayega koyi milne ke liye
phoolon se kaho taaron se kaho
phoolon se kaho taaron se kaho
chupke se sajaa den veeraana, hai veeraana

jab raat zara shabnam se ghule
laharayi huyi wo zulf khule
jab raat zara shabnam se ghule
laharaayi huyi vo zulf khule
nazron se nazar ek bhed kahe
nazron se nazar ek bhed kahe
dil dil se kahe ek afsaana, haay afsaana

rangeen fizaa chhaaye to zara
waade pe koyi aaye to zara
rangeen fizaa chhaaye to zara
waade pe koyi aaye to zara
ai josh-e-wafa dil cheez hai kya
ai josh-e-wafa dil cheez hai kya
ham jaan bhi de den nazraana, haay nazraana

bechain nazar betaab jigar
ye dil hai kisika deewaana haay deewaana

Classic Talat song.
One of his few “slightly fast” numbers. 🙂
