Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Aanchal mein saja lena kaliyaan

Posted on: November 22, 2008

While watching the picturisation of Bollywood songs, I have observed a few things which we are used to, but which are actually funny, if you think about it.

For instance, take solo songs, which are sung by one actor on the screen. It is fine as long as he is the only person on the screen. But there are cases when he/ she is not the only person on the screen. For instance, take a solo song being sung by the hero on the screen and the heroine is also there in the picturisation. It apppears funny to me that the hero is singing so much praising/ teasing her, and she is not able to respond except being shown as pleased/ blushing/ angry etc on the screen. She is unable to respond verbally because the music director decided the song to be a solo.

A lady keeping her mouth shut while so much is being said about her by a gentleman. It is not likely anywhere except in a Bollywood song. 😉

Here is one such solo song, picturised on Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh. The movie is “Phir wohi dil laaya hoon”. Lyrics of this song is by Majrooh Sultanpuri and O P Nayyar is the music director.

The song, incidentally, is among the all time classics in all counts, as was the case with many songs of those days.

Song- Aanchal mein saja lena kaliyan (Phir wohi dil laaya hoon) (1963) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

aanchal mein sajaa lenaa kaliyaan, zulfon mein sitaare bhar lenaa
aise hi kabhi jab shaam dhale, tab yaad hamen bhi kar lenaa
aanchal mein sajaa lenaa kaliyaan

aayaa thaa yahaan begaanaa saa
aayaa thaa yahaan begaanaa saa, chal doongaa kahin deewaanaa saa
chal doongaa kahin deewaanaa saa
deewaane ki khaatir tum koyi, ilzaam naa apne sar lenaa
aise hi kabhi jab shaam dhale, tab yaad hamen bhi kar lenaa
aanchal mein sajaa lenaa kaliyaan

rastaa jo mile anjaan koyi
rastaa jo mile anjaan koyi aa jaaye agar toofaan koyi
aa jaaye agar toofaan koyi
apne ko akelaa jaan ke tum
aankhon mein na aansoo bhar lenaa
aise hi kabhi jab shaam dhale, tab yaad hamen bhi kar lenaa
aanchal mein sajaa lenaa kaliyaan
zulfon mein sitaare bhar lenaa
aanchal mein sajaa lenaa kaliyaan

This is a Rafi classic. I have already commented on Asha’s “aankhon se jo utri” from this movie. Wonderful music in this movie by OP.

And the lyrics are also beautiful.

This movie is a treasure full of classic/popular song, which are forgotten now. I was looking for some songs which we had seen in the eighties on Cable TV. Now I find they r from this very film. e.g.
1. Humdum mere khel na jaano chahat ke iqraar ko
2. Banda parwar tham lo jigar – khidmat mien aapke huzur phir wahi dil laaya hun .
3. Aji Qibla mohtarma kabhi shola kabhi nagma
4. Meri be rukhi tum ne dekhi hai

As a major milestone in this site is close, these songs should find a place soon, hopefully.

Regards.

Atul, it is the same dilemma I face when I tag my songs. When it is a solo song, I am just not sure if I would need to tag it with both the hero and heroine’s name or just one of them. I am still wondering what to do (At present I tag both their names, but in a playlist of an actress I would find a male solo song, which seems rather odd).

By the way, first time I am listening to this song, and I like it. Rafi is GOD :).

In this scene in “Padosan” the song ‘Aanchal mein saja lena kaliyaan’ plays in the background from 11:00 onwards.
