Ajnabi tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho

Posted on: December 16, 2008

Kishore Kumar worked with Laxmikant Pyarelal for the first time in 1965 in a movie called “Hum Sab Ustaad Hain”. The movie itself is no longer remembered by anyone, but what music this movie had !

Laxmikant Pyarelal got to work with Kishore Kumar for the first time in this movie. And the result ? Two immortal iconic songs. One of them was a national integration song par excellence that went “pyaar baantte chalo” that is fondly remembered even today, and which has already been posted in this blog.

The other iconic song was one of the saddest songs ever, viz. “Ajnabi tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho”.

The lyricist who wrote such wonderful songs in this movie was Asad Bhopali.

And needless to say, Laxmikant Pyarelal would later work with Kishore Kumar in many movies, and would produce many more great songs in the coming decades. But remember, this great musical association of Kishore Kumar with Laxmikant Pyarelal began with this movie called “Hum sab ustaad hain”.

The song shows Kishore Kumar, jilted in love with Ameeta, singing this song in a party where Ameeta is also present. And the pain that the jilted lover would feel comes through so poignantly in this song. No one can see him because Kishore Kumar has died and it is his spirit that is singing the song.

PS-I have come to know that this song also has a female version with different lyrics which is sung by Lata and picturised on Ameeta . Now I have provided the video link and lyrics of this female version as well.

ajnabi

ajnabi
tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho
ajnabi
tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho
ye badi ajeeb si baat hai
ke nayi nayi mulaaqaat hai
phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho

tumne kabhi pyaar kiyaa thha kisi raahi se
tumne kabhi pyaar kiyaa thha kisi raahi se
tumne kabhi waada kiyaa thha kisi saathi se
na wo pyaar rahaa,
na wo baat rahi
phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi
tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho
ajnabi

dil mein rahe
aur hamaara dil tod diyaa
dil mein rahe
aur hamaara dil tod diyaa
saath chale
mod pe aake hamen chhod diyaa
tum ho kahin
aur ham kahin
phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi
tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho
ye badi ajeeb si baat hai
ke nayi nayi mulaaqaat hai
phir bhi jaane kyon on
ajnabi tum jaane pahchaane se lagte ho
ajnabi

phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi tum jaane pehchaane se lagte ho

lagta hai yoon
khwaab hai jaise koi dekha huaa
lagta hai yoon
khwaab hai jaise koi dekha huaa
kehta hai dil
aaj mila hai koi khoya huaa
na khayaal tumhen
na khayaal hamen
phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi
tum jaane pehchaane se lagte ho
ajnabi

kisko khabar
pehle miley thhey ham donon kahaan
kisko khabar
pehle miley thhey ham donon kahaan
kab se magar
dhoondhh rahaa thha tumhe mera jahaan
na to yaad tumhen
na to yaad hamen
phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi
tum jaane pehchaane se lagte ho

kitne janam beet gaye hain tumhen paane mein
kitne janam beet gaye hain tumhen paane mein
humne tumhein pyaar kiya hai anjaane mein
na kabhi miley
na qareeb huye
phir bhi jaane kyun un
ajnabi
tum jaane pehchaane se lagte ho
ye badi ajeeb si baat hai
ke nayi nayi mulaaqaat hai

Can someone post the English meaning od these lyrics please?

Also, does anyone have the lyrics/ meaning for ‘Dil ka diya- jala ke gaya- yeh kaun meri angadai me’ sung by Latha in Akashdeep?

Today you have posted one more beautiful song from “Hum Sab ustaad hain”,while thinking about it,I just got curious about whether you have included the lata`s version of “Ajanabi tum jaane pehchaane se lagthe ho” picturised on Ameetha and other female dancer. But it was not included, the lata`s version is somewhat fast and racy,(I think it was picturised as a song for happy occassion) I like it very much.I request you to give link to the video of lata`s version also. About the lyrics of the song, I haven`t obseved clearly whether they are the same or not, I think they are different.

Then another thing, the video link of this song also missing.

Atul,
The female version videos are not playable anymore.

I found a video which has both the Kishore and the Lata versions (Lata version starts at 3:41).

In the Lata version, there is a 3rd stanza (starting at 6: 42) that you have not included in the lyrics. I have noted it below – could you please include this? Thanks.

Kitne janam beet gaye hain tumhe paane mein
Kitne janam beet gaye hain tumhe paane mein
Humne tumhein pyaar kiya hai anjaane mein
Na kabhi miley
Na kareeb hue
Phir bhi jaane kyon
Ajnabi
Tum jaane pehchaane se lagte ho
Ye badi ajeeb si baat hai
Ki nayi nayi mulaqat hai
Phir bhi
Jaane kyon
Ajnabi
Ajnabi
Ajnabi

Atulji , you have mentioned here that the movie was the first association of Kishoreda and LP duo , but Kishoreda had sung very nice songs for LP duo in Mr X in Bombay . Hum Sab Ustaad Hain was released in 1965 while Mr X in Bombay’s release year was 1964 . How this anamoly occurred? Will you elaborate please ?
Further , the case may be similar to Rafi Sahib LP duo association . Rafi Sahib recorded his first song ‘ Tere Pyaar Be Mujhe Gham Diya ‘ for the duo in Chhaila Babu . Due to delay , the film was released in 1967 . Rafi Sahib recorded songs for LP duo in Parasmani for example ‘ Roshan Tumhi Se Duniya ‘ , later . But Parasmani was released in 1963 , at least four years than ‘ Chhaila Babu ‘ resulting in this type of anamoly .
