Filmfare best male singer awards began in 1960. Mukesh was the first winner for Anari, and then Rafi won it for the next two years for “Chaudhvin ka chaand” and “Sasuraal”. Then there was no award for 1963. The 1964 award was won by a new voice, viz Mahendra Kapoor for Gumrah (1963). The song which earned him this coveted prize was this song “chalo ik baar phir se ajnabi ban jaayen hum dono”.
This movie was a movie where Mala Sinha, the heroine, is called upon to make some serious sacrifices. From what I can make out, she loves Sunil Dutt, but she is forced to marry a widower viz Ashok Kumar.
With this background information,one can imagine the atmosphere at the party hosted in Ashok Kumar’s house where Sunil Dutt is called upon to sing on the piano. The pain and helplessness that both Sunil Dutt and Mala Sinha feel can well be imagined.
This poignant song written by Sahir and composed by Ravi was rightfully regarded as the best song sung by a male playback singer by the “Filmfare” magazine. This was the first of three such awards that Mahendra Kapoor won in his career.

Yes, this movie has quite a few nice songs.
The fact that there are so many excellent songs availalble certainly makes posting them easier.

I have said this many times – this song ranks very high for me for its lyrics alone. One of the very best.
Sahir saab, even by his own very high standards, must have been very proud of this one song.
And yes, the story was like you have described. Mala loved Sunil but was obliged to marry Ashok, for the sake of his kids (who were also her niece/nephew since their mother was her dead sister).

“Gumrah” means “person who has lost one’s way” that is “strayed”.

“gum” I guess getting lost, raah meaning way.
Remember the other movie, gum-naam?
Atul – Mala Sinha’s elder sister (in the movie) suddenly passes away, leaving her husband Ashok Kumar with two young children, of whom she (MS) is very fond of. Her father convinces/pressures her to marry Ashok Kumar, who is shown to be reluctant himself. That’s the circumstance of the marriage.
I thought Shashikala had a very good role in the movie and carried it off very effectively. I don’t know if she was nominated or won a supporting actess role for her performance. But she deserved it.

This is a song deserving a 5- star rating but someone seems to have given it 1-star before I gave it a 5-star rating.
Probably, Sahir Ludhianvi may have ended his two failed love affairs with the philosophy revealed in this song.
By the way, I had read a news item sometime back about a judge quoting two lines from this song ” Woh afsana jise anjam tak lana na ho mumkin, use ik khoobsurat mod dekar chhodna achchaa”. while delivering his judgement for closing a case relating to Bofors.

It takes a certain amount of maturity before one can fully appreciate the quality of lyrics of this song. The person who gave one star to this song may not be well equipped to appreciate this song. Fortunately, there have been lots and lots of people, who have been appreciating this song for nearly half a century since this song has been in existence.

This type of songs are called ‘ Break Up ‘ songs . The lyrics are too light and comical in a sense . ” Dekhegi Doordarshan ” and ” Dhoyegi Kachhe aur gande bachche ” , ” Banegi Tu House Biwi ” . Compare the lyrics of Sahirji ” Chalo Ik Baar ” with the lyrics of the todays’ songs. There is a Hell and Heaven difference between the two .
I rate this as 2nd best from the pen of Sahirji , 1st being ” Jinhe Naaz Hai Hind Pe ” by Rafi Sahib for Pyaasa 1957.

I love this song, as well as the other songs in this movie, such as “In baharon mein in fizaon mein tujhko mera pyar pukare aaja aajare …”
Two other piano songs are Mukesh in Andaz “Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe” and “Tu kahe agar ..” There was also one by Dilip Kumar in Aadmi, cannot remember the song but it was a good one.
