‘Sheesha’ (1986) was produced by Sattee Shourie and was directed by Basu Chatterji. The cast included Mithun Chakraborty, Moon Moon Sen, Mallika Sarabhai, Vijayendra Ghatge, Suresh Chatwal, Naaz, Mrinalini, Madhumeeta, Guddi Maruti, Nandita Thakur, Sudha Chopra, Bhagwan Sinha, Ranjana Sachdev, Arvind Deshpande, Sonal Randhawa etc. The film’s story was based on a Bengali novel, ‘Maan Sammaan’ written by Mani Shankar Mukherjee. The film was delayed in its completion due to budgetary constraints and the creative differences between the producer and the director. At one time, the film remained incomplete for a year or so until Mithun Chakraborty persuaded Sattee Shourie to let the film be completed for which he gave up a part of his fee. Basu Chatterji also waived his last instalment of fee. The film was certified by CBFC on June 15, 1986. The film got the theatrical release on October 3, 1986.
In the 1970s-80s, Basu Chatterji made many films with the stories based on the middle-class characters which a majority of cinegoers can relate them to their own life. However, in ‘Sheesha’ (1986), he deviated from from his usual light-hearted style and took a new genre of the film with the subject of the sexual harassment in work place, probably, the first Hindi film to take up this issue. After many years, the sexual harassment at office became known as ‘Me Too’ movement.
The wife of a senior executive of a drug company gets to know that her husband has been arrested by police on charge of sexual harassment of a telephone operator of his office on the complaint filed by her. With this, societal dynamism comes to play a part in the episode. The wife goes through the psychological and moral pressure of the society. She is not able to take a stand as to whether her husband is really the culprit as he has the image of a perfectly well-behaved gentleman. The victim faces society’s scrutiny as to her past character to prove that the charges were falsely made to exploit the high position of the executive. The drama shifts to the court room with a reputed family lawyer defending the executive. The suspense is carried on till the end of the film with an unexpected ending.
The story of the film in detail is as under:
Dinesh Prakash (Mithun Chakraborty), a senior executive in a pharmaceutical company is happily married to his collegemate, Manisha (Moon Moon Sen). On the birthday of Dinesh, Manisha arranges a get-together for their close friends which include his lawyer-friend, Ashok Kumar (Vijayendra Ghatge) and his wife, Deepa (Madhumeeta). However, Dinesh has not yet returned from his office despite the get-together for the celebration of his birthday. While all other friends leave the house after the dinner, Ashok Kumar and his wife remain with Manisha to at least give the company for dinner when Dinesh returns.
On enquiry made in the office, Ashok Kumar comes to know that Dinesh has been arrested by the police after Poonam (Mallika Sarabhai), a telephone operator of his company, has lodged a complaint of an attempted rape by Dinesh in his room when she met him to plead for continuation of her temporary job. Ashok rushes to the police station and gets Dinesh released from the police custody to report to the police station on the next day for recording his statement. On his return home from the police station, Manisha keeps aloof from Dinesh assuming him to be guilty of wrong doing given the fact that he is holding a senior level position in the company and such things can happen.
Until the court proceedings start as to decide whether Dinesh is guilty or not, the gossiping among the workers of the company with some added inputs from their own imaginations cast aspersions on both Dinesh and Poonam with latter subject to character assassination because she has divorced her husband within six months of the marriage and her close relationship with one of her office colleagues who had helped her to get the temporary job of the telephone operator.
During the preliminary investigation by the police, the statements of both Dinesh and Poonam is separately recorded. According to Poonam, she had taken an appointment with Dinesh to discuss the continuation of her temporary job of telephone operator as she needed the job to take care of her mother, a younger brother and sister. During their meeting, Poonam alleges that Dinesh, taking advantage of her requirement for the job attempted to rape her. However, she ran out of his cabin with her unbuttoned blouse and went to Dharmraj, a union leader who took her to the police station.
As per the submission made by Dinesh, Poonam has sought an appointment with him which he had initially rejected as whatever her demand can be raised with her immediate superior. However, she rushed to his cabin pleading for the continuation of her temporary job which he did not commit. At that point, she made advances towards him offering herself at which point he called his staff to take her out. At that time, she unbuttoned her blouse and went out of his cabin shouting to save her modesty.
Dinesh brings to the notice of his lawyer-friend, Ashok that he has a strong reason the believe that it was a pre-planned attempt to tarnish his image by Poonam in connivance with the union leader Dharamraj (Manek Chaudhary). The reason is that the police quickly arrived after the so-called attempted rape while even in murder cases police takes time to arrive at the spot.
As the day comes nearer for the start of the court proceedings, Manisha comes out of her aloofness and decides to investigate the matter of her own to get the facts right to decide whether her husband is guilty or not irrespective of the outcome from the court proceedings. She collects the background of Poonam with the help of a Homeopathic doctor (Bhagwan Sinha) of the locality where Poonam stays. With the proofs collected, Manisha is now more confident than before that her husband has been wrongly framed by Poonam to extract money.
On the final hearings of the matter in the court, lawyer Ashok Kumar defending Dinesh, cross examines Poonam by pointing out her past incidences to prove that she is of the questionable character. The first one is that her ex-husband had filed the case for attempted poisoning by Poonam for which she was arrested. She was released when her ex-husband took the blame on himself for taking sleeping pills for his attempted suicide as he loved his ex-wife. The second point was that in her earlier employment, she had filed an FIR with the police for her attempted rape by the manager which was dismissed by the court from the lack of evidence. Again, in an earlier employment, she was dismissed for her behaviour unbecoming of an employee and she has filed a complaint against the works manager which was dismissed by the court. All these evidences suggest that Poonam had malafide intentions. The judge pronounces Dinesh not guilty of attempted rape as the prosecution has failed to substantiate the charge. Manisha is elated with the judgement but Dinesh does not show any expressions on his face.
When Dinesh leaves the court premises, Poonam is waiting outside the court to confront with him. She tells him that what has really happened between him and her in his cabin she knows, the God knows and even he knows. She is waiting for a day when the person like him in the guise of respectability will be exposed and spend the life in remorse.
It is Manisha and Dinesh’s wedding anniversary day and their close friends have been invited for the dinner. But Dinesh’s face does not depict happiness after he has been absolved of the charges of attempted rape. His conscious tells him that what he has done with Poonam was wrong even though his friends and wife think that he is innocent. His wife thinks that perhaps after the shadow of the attempted rape charge, her husband is exhausted from the stress of last many days and he needs rest. But Dinesh will always on the tenterhook from his fear if Manisha comes to know of the truth that he had really attempted to rape Poonam during one of his weakest points. His peace of mind is lost forever.
The film’s story covering the sexual harassment at the work place was quite ahead of its time. Basu Chatterji did not deviate from the core element of the story. So, for the general audience, there is not much of the entertainment. The film failed at the box office and vanished into oblivion. I liked the film for its realistic depiction of the issues concerning the sexual harassment in the office. I also liked the unusual and restrained performances of Mithun Chakraborty and Moon Moon Sen. Vijayendra Ghatge has also given a good performance as a lawyer friend. But the top rating for the excellent performance goes to Mallika Sarabhai for her complex character keeping the audience guessing whether she is genuinely the victim of sexual harassment or she has laid a calculated trap for her company’s executive. Her last scene with Mithun Chakraborty in an assertive manner after the judge pronounces him not guilty is praiseworthy which will surely draw sympathy for her role from the audience. In reality, most of the sexual harassment cases are dismissed due to lack of evidence and character assassiination of the victims by the lawyers in the court.
Mallika Sarabhai is the daughter of the space scientist, Vikram Sarabhai, the founder and the first chairman of ISRO and Mrinalini Sarabhai, the Indian classical dancer. Mallika Sarabhai is a graduate in Economics, MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad and PhD in Organisational Behaviour. She is also a trained Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer. She has acted in Hindi, English, Gujarati and Malayalam films.
The film had four songs written by Yogesh and set to music by Bappi Lahiri. The film makes a debut on the Blog with it first song, ‘kya hoga kyun hoga’ rendered by Asha Bhosle who sings for both Sonal Randhawa and Mallika Sarabhai who are sisters in the film.
The background to the song is that Manisha (Moon Moon Sen) has arranged a party in the house in celebration of the birthday of her husband, Dinesh (Mithun Chakraborty) who is held up in the office and the guests are waiting for him. In Poonam’s (Mallika Sarabhai) house a party arranged by her younger sister (Sonal Randhawa) is going on for her friend who has come from Dubai. In between the song, Poonam returns from her office who is in a foul mood. She has some arguments with her mother (Gauri Verma) and later she gives a disgusted look at her ex-husband who is drinking. But after cooling down, she joins her younger brother, Govind (Ravi Jhankal) and the sister to dance with her.

Prakashchandra ji,
I checked the photos of Shakeela Majeed you sent me on whatsapp. The dancer’s face has the resemblance of Shakeela Majeed. I agree.
I went by AI which identified her as Sonal Randhawa. This proves that human mind is more sharper than AI.
Atul ji, please amend the dancer’s name from Sonal Randhawa to Shakeela Majeed.
