Wo shaam kuchh ajeeb thi

Posted on: December 20, 2008

I have mentioned earlier theat there are bollywood songs for different peiods of the day. I have mostly dwelt upon late night songs which I call “chaayaget” songs in honour of Vividh Bharati programme of that name. But what about evening songs ?

Well, when it comes to evening songs, I am readily reminded of a couple of Kishore Kumar songs from late 1960s, and both were picturised on Rajesh Khanna. One was from “Kati Patang” that went “ye shaam mastani, madhosh kiye jaay”. What a song. I just realied that I have yet to post this song in my blog. What an omission ! I will address this lapse soon.

The second “shaam” song, which is equally wonderful, is the one that I am posting now. “wo shaaam kuch ajeeb thi” from “Khamoshi” is a superb song. I have already posted two outstanding songs from this movie sung by two other singers and this song sung by Kishore Kumar shows that “Khamoshi” was a musical blockbuster. And one cannot praise its music director (Hemant Kumar) and lyricist (Gulzar) high enough.

I am still amazed how one movie can have as many as three outstanding songs sung by three different songs. It is just mind boggling.

Note- The two other outstanding songs from this movie are “hamne dekhi hai un aankhon ki”-sung by Lata, and “tum pukaar lo”-by Hemant Kumar, which have already been posted.

Song-Wo shaam kuchh ajeeb thi (Khamoshi) (1969) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Gulzar, MD-Hemant Kumar

Lyrics

Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai
Woh kal bhi paas paas thi woh aaj bhi kareeb hai
Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai
Woh kal bhi paas paas thi woh aaj bhi kareeb hai
Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi

Jhuki huyi nigaah mein, kahin mera khayaal tha
Dabi dabi hansi mein ik,haseen saa gulaal tha
Main sochta tha, mera naam gungunaa rahi hai woh
Main sochta tha, mera naam gungunaa rahi hai woh
Na jaane kyon laga mujhe, ke muskura rahi hai woh
Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi

Mera khayaal hai abhi jhuki huyi nigaah mein
Khili huyi hansi bhi hai, dabi huyi si chaah mein
Main jaanta hoon, mera naam gunguna rahi hai woh
Main jaanta hoon, mera naam gunguna rahi hai woh
Yahi khayaal hai mujhe, ke saath aa rahi hai woh
Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi, yeh shaam bhi ajeeb hai
Woh kal bhi paas paas thi woh aaj bhi kareeb hai
Woh shaam kuchh ajeeb thi

One of my fav Kishore songs.
This used to air frequently on AIR.
My only grouse was that they would never air the whole song. They would mess it up at the end…

“main jaanta hoon, mera naam…gunguna….”
And that would be it.

During one of the radio interview by Ameen Sayani, Hemant Kumar mentioned that Rajesh Khanna had requested that the song to be picturised on him (Rajesh Khanna) be given to Kishore Kumar. Hemant Kumar obliged and the immortal song was born. Love his song.
