Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Gori tori paijaniya

Posted on: December 20, 2008

It is a song that is less popular than other songs from this movie. And reasons are not too far to seek. It is a semi classical song, and such songs are rarely popular with lay audience.

Moreover, the picturisation is no less semi classical. The picturisation shows Rajesh Khanna singing this song and Hema Malini performing a semi classical dance on it.

Manna Dey’s singing, and Hema Malini’s dance, both are very good and leave the audience spell bound. Such a song deserves better appreciation than what it seems to have got.

The songs that Manna Dey often got to sing in Bollywood movies were not easy songs to sing, and he would give them his best. And when one looks at the list of Popular Manna Dey songs, one may find that the Manna Dey songs that became popular form a very high percentage of all the songs that he got to sing. And many of the all time great immortal songs in Bollywood movie history have been sung by Manna Dey.

And this particular song is no different. It is so nice to listen to (and watch to).

Song-Gori tori paijaniya (Mehbooba) (1976) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

I haven’t heard this song before, but it is beautiful. It reminded me of another song by Manna Dey, “kaun aaya mere man ke dwaare paayal ki jhankaar liye …” in Dekh Kabira Roya. There was another nice song by Manna Dey in that movie, but I cannot remember it right now. Manna Dey can sing classical and comic songs and he can make a classical song beautiful even while he is making it sound funny, as in “Ek chatur naar..”

I guess these are the paayal songs!

It is just two days back that I was listening to “kaun aaya mere man ke dwaare” and I was told by music experts what a difficult song it was to sing.

Atul, it was such a joy to listen and watch this song after so many years.
It is an absolutely fantastic song, with absolutely fantastic picturisation. Hema is just wonderful in this song.
Indeed this song may not be all that well known – especially amongst the younger generation. That is because such songs are not publicised.

Thanks to you, hopefully more people will know this now.
This is an absolute treat of a song for anybody who enjoys rich, classical music with equally rich, classical dance and picturisation.

Despite not being an expert, my gut feeling says that this song and dance is of a very high quality and it deserves to be listened to ( and viewed) by fans of Bollywood movies.
