Sundari aay haay sundari

Posted on: December 21, 2008

As Tapori songs go, this was creme de la creme of its genre which I liked a lot in 1970s. And guess what, I forgot all about this song. That is, till two days ago, when I accidentally stumbled upon this song again. And this time I realised that the song was from “Anokhi Ada”, the movie from which I have posted two songs already !

What it means is that “Anokhi Ada” was a surprise treasure trove of Kishore Kumar songs. It was in this movie that I discoved the rare kind of Kishore Kumar, viz a qawwali (“haal kya hai dilon ka na pooccho sanam”) and now this tapori song.

“Sundari aay haay sundari”- what tapori lyrics our venerable Majrooh Saab has come up with ! Laxmikant Pyarelal inany case were experts in composing such lively numbers. Kishore Kumar in any case was just the voice tailormade for such songs.

And Jumping jack Jeetendra is just the hero to jump up and down, to and fro ( in common parlance “dance”) . And Jeetendra is paying this “tribute” to Rekha, though in India those days (and even today) it is regarded as eve teasing and is punishable. But while Bollywood law enforcement wing is very particular when it comes to enforcing IPC 302 (murder) and sentences even innocents on this charge, section 354 for IPC (eve teasing etc) is deemed to be non existent in Bollywood picturisations, and Heroes are given full liberty to tease the ladies, who are seen resisting hero’s advances throughout the song, but then the ladies soften their views on the matter by the time the song is drawing to a close.

To see a practical demontration of “eve teasing” Bollywood style, it is just the song for you. Enjoy.

kaisi anokhi adaa jaani hai teri
kaisi anokhi adaa jaani hai teri
phir se pakad bainyaan jaraa pyaar se meri
teraa yaar main nahin hai, magar aisi kyaa kami hai
shakal to milti hai tere yaar se meri

bure nahin ham bhi idhar dekho naa
sundari aay haay sundari

ho gayi gussaa are tum to kasam se
ho gayi gussaa are tum to kasam se
aisi badi kaun khataa ho gayi hamse
gore gaalon waali baayi jaraa thaam li kalaayi
khaali-peeli tum to khafaa ho gayi hamse
hai naa yahi baat to phir dekho naa
bure nahin ham bhi idhar dekho naa
sundari aay haay sundari
sundari aay haay sundari
apun ko bhi ek nazar dekho naa
bure nahin ham bhi idhar dekho naa
sundari aay haay sundari

Arrey, classic tapori song.
Brings back memories.

I remember this line very well
“Kaisi anokhi ada jaani hai teri”. I used to sing it a lot as a young boy.

Not to anybody in particular. 😉

Indeed it was my favourite song as well. So just imagine my pleasant surprise when I stumbled upon this song again, after some 35 years or so. It was like coming across an old acquaintance after 35 yeras, much like how it happens in the last reel of a Manmohan Desai movie.
