Piya aiso jiya me samaay gayo re

on:This is one song that I just loved to listen to, when I paid attention to its lyrics. The lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni captures the feelings of a newly married typical India woman of those days beautifully. The words in the lyrics are so cute and realistic, and they are the kind of words that are used in rural areas of UP.
And Geeta Dutt’s voice is just perfect for this song. Playfulness, naughtiness, coyness, everything is on display in her voice.
And kudos to Hemant Kumar for creating this masterpiece.
As far as the picturisation is concerned, this was a Guru Dutt movie, so one can expert good picturisation, as so it turns out so. The picturisation shows Meena Kumar- looking happy for a change- getting ready in front of her dressing table, with a maid helping her out. It is so very realistic. I can vouch for the fact that women those days actually used to get ready in the evenings like this when it was time for their husbands to come back from work.
It is a beautiful song, nicely composed and nicely picturised.

Song-Piya aiso jiya me (Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam ) (1962) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Hemant Kumar
Lyrics
piyaa aiso jiyaa mein samaay gayo re
ki main tan man ki sudh budh ganwaa baithi
piyaa aiso jiyaa mein samaay gayo re
ki main tan man ki sudh budh ganwaa baithi
har aahat pe samjhi wo aay gayo re
har aahat pe samjhi wo aay gayo re
jhat ghoonghat mein mukhdaa chhupaa baithi
piyaa aiso jiyaa mein samaay gayo re …
more angnaa mein jab purvayyaa chali
more dwaare ki khul gayi kiwadiyaan
more angnaa mein jab purvayyaa chali
more dwaare ki khul gayi kiwadiyaan
o daiyaa! dwaare ki khul gayi kiwadiyaan
maine jaanaa ki aa gaye saanvariyaa more
maine jaanaa ki aa gaye saanvariyaa more
jhat phoolan ki sejiyaa pe jaa baithi
piyaa aiso jiyaa mein samaay gayo re
ki main tan man ki sudh budh ganwaa baithi
piyaa aiso jiyaa mein samaay gayo re …
jhat nainan mein kajraa lagaa baithi
piyaa aiso jiyaa mein samaay gayo re
ki main tan man ki sudh budh ganwaa baithi
har aahat pe samjhi wo aay gayo re
har aahat pe samjhi wo aay gayo re
jhat ghoonghat mein mukhdaa chhupaa baithi

Very nice song. I love the precision with which Geeta Dutt drops her words. Do you have “Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo”? Can I search by artist on your site? Sorry about the questions.

I love all of Geeta dutt’s songs. It is a pity she faded away from the public eye. Her voice seems to glide over the song, and she can convey pain, mischief, laughter and happiness with equal ease. Some of her other songs which I love are:
“Aan milo aan milo shyam sanware …” from Devdas
“Naa main dhan chaahun …” from Kala Bazar
“Jaane kya tune kahi …” from Pyaasa
Thanks for posting this song!

I have been trying to remember as many of Geeta Dutt’s songs (without going through the Internet sites!) and here are a few more:
“Babuji dheere chalna …”,
“Ghunghat ke pat kholre tohe piya milenge …”
“Sun sun sun zalima…”
“kabhi aar kabhi paar …”
“Rimjhim ke taraane leke aayi barsaat …”
What a great singer!

Meena Kumari always looked so beautiful,no matter what. She looked extremely beautiful whether she had make up-jewellery-good clothes or dressed simple. Many people used to compare her with Madhubala ji and liked Madhubala Ji better but to me Meena ji was most beautiful heroine of her time. Waheeda Rehman came close second and they were equally good in acting too.
Geeta Dutt’s sultry voice suits this song perfectly and it is picturised perfectly. Full justice done in every area of this song by everyone involved.Very few songs have that quality.
You should have another song of Meena ji-Kachhi hai umariya….
Thanks for the song.

A bit of trivia—As usual Guru Dutt had a different cast and crew in mind before starting work on the film. He considered Shashi Kapoor and then Biswajit before taking on the part of Bhoothnath. Nargis and then Jitendra Arya’s wife Chhaya were considered for the role of Chhoti Bahu. He wanted S.D. Burman and Sahir Ludhianvi for the music and lyrics but S.D. Burman was unwell and Sahir declined the offer.
Hemant Kumar lost out the Award for Best Music which went to Shankar – Jaikishen for their score in Professor (1962)
