Tum mujhe yoon bhula na paaoge

Posted on: December 23, 2008

“Pagla Kahin Ka” was one Shammi Kapoor movie that came at the fag end of his career as a Hero. It was a movie where he did not play his usual flamboyant roles, but here he was a mortal with human frailties.

Indian audience used to charismatic larger than life heroes refuse to accept them in oles where they are portrayed as mortals. And that could be one of the reasons why this movie was one of Shammi Kapoors’s forgettable movies box office wise.

Even the Rafi song picturised on him in this movie was a serious song. Rafi has sung some lighthearted time pass songs that became evergreen. This time he sings a poignant song- “Tum mujhe bhula na paaoge, haan tum mujhe”. And guess what ? This song too has gone on to become a Rafi classic.

Incidentally, the same song ( with slightly different lyrics) was also sung by Lata ( picturised on Asha Parekh). This song is also good, but in my subjective judgement, Rafi version is in a different league altogether.

Song-Tum mujhe bhula na paaoge (Pagla Kahin ka) (1970) Singer-Rafi/Lata, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics

Rafi version
———————————-
tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere
sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
ho tum mujhe yoon …

wo bahaaren wo chaandni raaten
hamne ki thi jo pyaar ki baaten
wo bahaaren wo chaandni raaten
hamne ki thi jo pyaar ki baaten
un nazaaron ki yaad aayegi
jab khayaalon mein mujhko laaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
ho tum mujhe yoon …

mere haathon mein teraa chehraa thaa
jaise koyi gulaab hotaa hai
mere haathon mein teraa chehraa thaa
jaise koyi gulaab hotaa hai
aur sahaaraa liyaa thaa baahon kaa
wo shama kis tarah bhulaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
ho tum mujhe yoon

mujhko dekhe binaa qaraar naa thaa
ek aisaa bhi daur guzraa hai
mujhko dekhe binaa qaraar naa thaa
ek aisaa bhi daur guzraa hai
jhooth maano to poochhlo dil se
main kahoongaa to rooth jaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere
sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
ho tum mujhe yoon bhula na paaoge
ho tum mujhe yoon

Lata version
———————————————–
tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere
sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon …

Beeti baaton ka kuch khayaal karo
kuch to bolo kuch hamse baat karo
Beeti baaton ka kuch khayaal karo
kuch to bolo kuch hamse baat karo
raaze dil main tumhe bataa doongi
main tumhaari hoon maan jaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhula na paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon

meri khaamoshiyon ko samjho tum
zindagi yaad mein guzaari hai
meri khaamoshiyon ko samjho tum
zindagi yaad mein guzaari hai
main miti hoon tumhaari chaahat me
aur kitna mujhe mitaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhula na paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon

Dil hi dil me tumhi se pyaar kiya
apne jeewan ko bhi nissaar kiya
Dil hi dil me tumhi se pyaar kiya
apne jeewan ko bhi nissaar kiya
kaun tadpa tumhaari raahon me
jab ye sochoge jaan jaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhula na paaoge
jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere
sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon ..

Rafi Sahaab’s nostagically emotional classic that’s “in a different league altogether.”

Very apt background summary of the movie has been given. Yes, it did not do well like Shammi Kapoor’s other movies – at least most of them.

Thank you so much!

This has turned out to be so true – Jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere, sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge … I found myself humming this song, so I came here to look for it, and here it is, and I am singing/humming along with the song! And yes, I agree, Rafi’s version is in a league of its own altogether. Thanks, Atul!

But the wonder is that there was no mention of this famous song in Binaca Geetmala, this classic song has not got any place in Binaca Geetmala.. I don’t know the reason..
