Dholey tu aaj apne dil ke sab daag dholey

I have been coming across “new” songs quite regularly these days. In one case, I even came across a Mukesh song sung for a Caribbean movie in 1970s.
This particular song is from a Bollywood movie, and it is sung by Kishore Kumar. and frankly, it beats me why this song failed to become popular. It is very much a forgotten song, though it appears to be a great comedy song to me, that deserved much better fate.
The song is a “dhobi” song and it talks about washing viz “dholey tu aaj apne dil ke saare daag dholey”. If our ad agencies knew of this song, they could easily have substituted “dil” by say “Rin” or “Vim” to come up with their detergent jingle like- “dholey tu aaj apne Rin se saare daag dholey”.
Kishore Kumar as a dhobi wearing a dhoti and upto his usual antics is hilarious. In fact the name of the movie “Apna Haath Jagannath” itself is a clue that the movie must be a laugh riot.
The washermen, led by Kishore Kumar have so much fun on their job, singing and dancing while washing the clothes in the dhobi ghat. Iam sure this is they way to go about any job. What a great fun song.
I have no idea how this movie fared. Apparently, the movie did not do all that well, going by the fact that a song like this song was lying forgotten for nearly half a century.
And I can assure my readers that there are many Kishore Kumar songs like this that deserve to be brought back into circulation from their anonymity.

Never heard this song before.
Of late, I am having this experience quite often here. 🙂
It is a humbling experience – and the best thing about I am expanding my knowledge of songs as a result.
And I am sure there are many more out there that are definitely worth listening to and I am not aware of at all.
