Today (1 october 2016) is the 110th birth anniversary of S D Burman (1 october 1906- 31 october 1975). He made his debut as a music director in Hindi movies in 1946 (some half a decade prior to the beginning of golden era of HFM) and bowed out in 1975 (some half a decade before the end of the golden era of HFM). So it can be said that S D Burman was one of those music directors who was in the thick of action for much of the golden era of HFM. WAR AGAINST CORRUPTION IS THE MOTHER OF ALL WARS

The observations made by the Supreme Court of India :
Corruption is opposed to democracy and social order, being not only anti people, but aimed and targeted against them. It effects the society and destroys the cultural heritage. Here is another gem of a duet from the film Apna Haath Jagannath (1960). Three song from this movie are already discussed in these pages. This one is a fun filled duet by Kishore and Asha Bhosle. I had seen this song many years ago on Doordarshan in the Chitrahaar program. The words and the music was all lost from memory, just the visual of Kishore Kumar walking, and being followed by a lady in a car remained in the mind. Recently, browsing through YouTube, I chanced to see this visual as the thumbnail image, and lo, I found this lost friend once again.

This is a gem of a song from the movie Apna Haath Jaganaath. This is a 1960 film with Kishore Kumar and Saeeda Khan in lead roles. The movie was very topical for the time it was created. With a large number of educated youth coming into their own in the society, the issues of employment opportunities were as crucial at those times as they are now, only that such issues were just beginning to get the attention of the mainstream society. The movie is about the difficulties faced by educated young men to establish themselves in jobs or in vocational professions. The movie had a message about the dignity of labor, as well as an examination of the government policies (see the song ‘permit permit’ from this movie; already posted on this blog) that were beginning to breed corruption in the society.

I have been coming across “new” songs quite regularly these days. In one case, I even came across a Mukesh song sung for a Caribbean movie in 1970s.
