Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Har chehra yahaan chaand

Posted on: January 8, 2009

I have been discussing Bollywood songs for the last several months. Most of these songs were composed by big established names. But there were a few songs that were created by less known music directors.

Some of the songs created by these less known music directors are so outstanding that one wonders why they did not get more opportunities. It is here that luck plays a huge part. One needs luck to succeed in any field, and one needs far far bigger slices of luck to succeed in Bollywood, irrespective on the raw talent at the disposal of the aspirant.

Sonik Omi, the uncle-nephew pair had worked as assistants to many music directors for yeras, and many hit songs of those music directors musyt surely be the creation for Sonik Omi. And when they branched out into independent music direction, their music was stunning. “Dil Ne phir yaad kiay” was full of outstanding songs. Then came “Aabroo” and “Mahua”. The songs of these movies just mesmerise you. At least that is the effect of these songs on me even today.

But then how come Sonik Omi failed to get most assignments ? It was mainly because the movies where they gave music were small budget movies which often had poor story line or lesser known actors and as a result the movie failed at the box office. Aspiring music directors were unlikely to get new assignments if their movies failed. I think Sonik Omi were very unlucky indeed.

The way Sonik Omi created magical music is something unbelievable. And one can say that for a large number of their songs.

One singer whose voice took on a new dimension while singing for Sonik Omi was Rafi. To do it time and again is just out of this world.

Just listen to this song- “Har chehra yahaan chaand har zarrra sitaara”. Just unbelievable.

Sonik Omi had a very good understanding with the lyricist G L Rawal, and it is G L Rawal who wrote most, if not all lyrics for Sonik Omi. What I have said about Sonik Omi, is applicable for G L Rawal too. He too needed to have luck on his side to succeed and luck did not smile on him.

This song is an absolutely magical song.

Song-Har chehra yahaan chaand (Aabroo) (1968 ) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-G S Rawal, MD-Sonik Omi

Lyrics

har chehraa yahaan chaand
har chehraa yahaan chaand to har zarraa sitaaraa
har chehraa yahaan chaand to har zarraa sitaaraa
ye waadi-e-kashmeer hai jannat kaa nazaaraa
jannat kaa nazaaraa
har chehraa yahaan chaand

hansti hain jo kaliyaan to haseen phool hain khilte
hansti hain jo kaliyaan to haseen phool hain khilte
hain log yahaan jaise utar aaye farishte
ho
har dil se nikalti hai yahaan pyaar ki dhaaraa
har dil se nikalti hai yahaan pyaar ki dhaaraa
ye waadi-e-kashmeer hai jannat kaa nazaaraa
jannat kaa nazaaraa
har chehraa yahaan chaand

din-raat hawaa saaj bajaati hai suhaane
din-raat hawaa saaj bajaati hai suhaane
nadiyon ke labon par hain muhabbat ke taraane
ho
masti mein hai doobaa huaa behosh kinaaraa
masti mein hai doobaa huaa behosh kinaaraa
ye waadi-e-kashmeer hai jannat ka nazaara
jannat ka nazaara …
har chehra yahan chaand

ye jalwaa-e-rangeen hai kisi khwaab ki taabeer
ye jalwaa-e-rangeen hai kisi khwaab ki taabeer
yaa phoolon mein baithi huyi dulhan ki hai tasweer
o
yaa tham gayaa chaltaa huaa pariyon kaa shikaaraa
yaa tham gayaa chaltaa huaa pariyon kaa shikaaraa
ye waadi-e-kashmeer hai jannat ka nazaara
jannat ka nazaara …
har chehraa yahaan chaand to har zarraa sitaaraa
har chehraa yahaan chaand to har zarraa sitaaraa
ye waadi-e-kashmeer hai jannat kaa nazaaraa
jannat kaa nazaaraa
har chehraa yahaan chaand

What a beautiful song! It made me wish I had seen Kashmir in those days, before it was torn apart by strife. Oh well, at least I can see it in these video clips and in my copy of Kashmir ki Kali.
I have no recollection of hearing this song before, and yet it seems familiar, but it is definitely a very good song. Thanks for the song, Atul.

Hi all,
BTW Sonic & Omi (BLIND BY BIRTH) were Usha Khanna’s assistants & Usha Khanna was O.P. Nayyars, Sonic-Omi’s Music was between Laxmikant-pyarelal & Kalyanji-Anandji.. The formers were the latter’s assitants…

Thanks for the information. I was not aware that Usha Khanna was O P Nayyar’s assistant.

Thanks Sam for pointing out the missed verse. Unable to locate the video for it in the DVD of movie as well as on YT means audio version has an additional stanza. Here is the lyrics :

ye chotiyaan barfon ki hain aazaadi ka parcham
ye chotiyaan barfon ki hain aazaadi ka parcham

hansti hain gulaami pe ye insaan ki hardam

deti hain ye aakaash ko baahon ka sahaara
deti hain ye aakaash ko baahon ka sahaara

ye waadi-e-kashmeer hai jannat ka nazaaraa,

jannat kaa nazaaraa,

har chehraa yahaan chaand
