Khizaan ke phool pe aati kabhi bahaar nahin

Posted on: January 20, 2009

“Do Raaste” was full of great songs of different moods. Most of the songs were happy songs, full of song and dance.

Quite a few singers were used in this movie. Kishore Kumar, who was emerging as a gale force that would soon sweep all other male singers, had got just one song to sing in this movie.

It was a sad song. And as things stand, it is a sad song as good as any that have been composed in Bollywood history. The lyrics of Anand Bakshi are simple looking ( though with a few unfamiliar sounding words) but hard hitting and emphatic in getting its message across. And Laxmikant Pyarelal, whose racy tunes in the other songs of this movie had the public dancing on their feet, showed that they could hold their own when it came to sad songs as well.

Yes it is true,Kishore Kumar ( known for singing mostly cheerful songs), Anand Bakshi ( author of several happy songs)and Laxmikant Pyarelal ( known for composing numerous racy tunes) have combined to produce a sad song par excellence like this.Yes, it shows the versatility that they were capable of.

Song-Khizaan ke phool pe aati kabhi bahaar nahin (Do Raaste) (1969) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

khizaan ke phool pe aati kabhi bahaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin
khizaan ke phool pe aati kabhi bahaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin

na jaane pyaar mein kab main, zubaan se phir jaaun
main banke aansoo khud apni, nazar se gir jaaun
teri qasam hai meraa koyi, aitbaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin

main roz lab pe nayi ek, aah rakhtaa hoon
main roz ek naye gham ki raah taktaa hoon
kisi khushi ka mere dil ko, intzaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin

ghareeb kaise mohabbat, kare ameeron se
bichhad gaye hain kayi raanjhe, apni heeron se
kisi ko apne muqaddar pe, ikhtiyaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin
khizaan ke phool pe aati kabhi bahaar nahin
mere naseeb mein ai dost, teraa pyaar nahin

You know, I think we (Indians, hindi-urdu-etc. speakers, etc.) have the biggest body of poetic works in the world….and we can sing them too!

Have been listening to this song a lot in the last couple of days.
This stanza is particularly meaningful for me now in the light of the current Ashes series:

main roz lab pe nayi ek, aah rakhtaa hoon
main roz ek naye gham ki raah taktaa hoon
kisi khushi ka mere dil ko, intzaar nahin
