Mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi

Posted on: February 1, 2009

I was not aware much about this movie “Saathi” (1968). I am surprised to see that this movie is not that well known to me despite this movie boasting of some very nice songs.

But let us not forget that this movie and its songs were released in 1968- a year that I have named as the titanium year in the history of Bollywood movie music. Many great songs of that year found themselves falling by the wayside for one reason or the other. One major reason why many great songs failed this year has to do with the emergence of Kishore Kumar as a major male playback singer and also the emergence of Rajesh Khanna as a hero.

Rajendra Kumar and Vyjyanti Mala on the other hands were setting stars. The same could be said by Naushad, the music director of this movie. What great music he gave ? But that did not matter, because R D Burman’s music was all that mattered those days.

So despite so much class and quality in the songs of this movie, the songs did not make too much headway in the popularity stakes during its time.

Going putely by merit, it is a nice song. The song is sung by Lata and is picturised as a party song. The picturisation shows Simi Garewal singing this song in a party attended among others by Rajendra Kumar. Rajendra Kumar has lost Vyjyanti Mala, it seems that this song reminds him of Vyjyanti Mala, so much so that he temporarily sees Vyjyanti Mala singing the song instead of Simi Garewal.

I have heard this song before, and it is one of the most memorable songs that I heard during my tender yeras when I was cutting my teeth as a Bollywood music listeners. As as can be imagined, I had no clue about what a lyricist was or what a music director was.

Incidentally Majrooh Sultanpuri was the lyricist of this song, aand as mentioned earlier Naushad was themusic director.

Despite giving such outstanding musivc in this movie, Naushad, as well as other music directors belonging to the old guard found themselves jobless soon as R D Burman soon took over as the biggest name among music directors.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, we can as well give this song the due which it did not receive at that time. It is very much a Lata classic in my opinion.

Song- Mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi (Sathi) (1968 ) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi
tune dekha huyi khil ke bahaar
mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi
tune dekha huyi khil ke bahaar
mere jeewan saathi

masti nazar mein kal ke khumaar ki
mukhde pe laali hai piyaa tere pyaar ki
khushboo se teri tan ko basaa ke
main aau daali si tere gulzaar ki
mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi
tune dekha huyi khil ke bahaar
mere jeewan saathi

kahaan ka ujaala abhi wahi raat hai
gori gori baanho pe jaise tera haath hai
bajti hai choodi teri dhadkan pe
kaanon me ab tak wahi teri baar hai
mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi
tune dekha huyi khil ke bahaar
mere jeewan saathi

tujhko main sajna bindiya ka pyaar doon
chunri ke rang se ghar ko sanwaar doon
zulfon ka gazra nainon ka kaajal
tere nazraane hain tujhpe hi waar doon
mere jeewan saathi kali thi main to pyaasi
tune dekha huyi khil ke bahaar
mere jeewan saathi

I liked the film, although it is pretty over-the-top sentimental and a bit silly. Simi was really good though. And the songs are very nice 🙂
