Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

O rabba khair

Posted on: February 3, 2009

I thought that I knew about all Rafi-Shammi Kapoor songs and there were hardly any more songs left for me to be discovered.

How wrong I was ? Just now I stumbled upon a song called ‘Rabba Khair”. I thought it was “Shabba khair” (Junglee), but no, this song is a different song. This song “Rabba Khair” is from “Laat Sahab” (1967). It has been written by Shailendra and the music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

This is a duet sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. In contrast, “shabba” khair was written by Hasrat Jaipuri and the female voice was that of Lata.

One is used to seeing Shammi Kapoor paired against ladies half his age. So it comes as a surprise to see him paired against Nutan in this song. I was not aware that Shammi Kapoor had worked with Nutan in any of his movies. Now I know.

The song itself is a great Rafi-Asha Bhonsle number sung with enthusiasm. It is a fast racy number, and if I was not aware about the music director, I would have have thought that it was an O P Nayyar composition. Fast music, Rafi-Asha singing it- all that had that unmistakable stamp of being an O P Nayyar song, but this song was a Shankar Jaikishan song , as already mentioned.

Nutan by that time was one of the seniormost actreses, and she had worked in sad roles, serious roles etc, so seeing him act in a Shammi Kapoor movie in a role that was essayed by much younger actresses in earlier movies seems a bit out of place.

The picturisation shows Shammi Kapoor doing what he used to do in similar songs, viz rolling in the ground, jumping around etc. Nutan on the other hand was required to do the stuff that younger actresses had been doing in earlier Shammi Kapoor movies. I am interested to know how the spectators of those days reacted to two middle age actors in such a role. It appears to me that both Shammi Kapoor and Nutan had been put on too much weight. Yes, even Nutan ( who looks so slim and trim in her movies appears uncharacteristically over weight in this song.

They may have played their roles in this song by memory, but the song itself is wonderful. I have heard this song for the first time just today, and after listening to it a few times, I am
hooked.

Looking at old Binaca geetmala records, I see that this song was nowhere in contention among the most popular songs of those days. So I suppose that I am not the only one who may have been oblivious to the existence of this song. Purely on merit, this is a wonderful song, as good as any that were composed during those days. It is certainly yet another Rafi-Shammi classic, as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for this song, Atul. I have heard it sometime in the distant past, but had forgotten all about it till I heard it today. Btw, there is a Shammi – Nutan movie, made in their very early days, with a couple of nice songs in it. I have them somewhere in my VHS collection of old songs, and I will post a farmaish once I locate the songs!

Thanks for the great service you are doing here.

Atul, plz post a review of another song from the same movie movie titled—Dil Le Gyi Le Gayi Le Gayi Ek Chulbuli Chulbuli Naazni.

It’s a typical high energy Shammi kapoor song.

So I see that there are a few more Shammi songs left undiscovered.

Atul-ji, just a correction: the lyrics are by Hasrat Jaipuri and not Shailendra.

Lyricist of the song Tan mein Agani is Hasrat jaipuri
only 2 songs of Latt Saheb(1967) were written by Shailendra
(i.e.,1)Ae chaand zara chup ja & 2)savere wali gaadi se)
and all the other songs of the movies are written by Hasrat Jaipuri
