Parwar digaare aalam

This movie “Hatimtai” (1956) was a C grade movie, the kind of movie which is lucky to see the light of day, and which is destined to pass into oblivion soon thereafter.
But there was one song in this movie that managed to catch the ears of the public. And with time, its popularity only grew. Sung by Rafi and written by Akhtar Romani, its music was composed by S N Tripathi.
This song” parwar digaare aalam” is one that many people have heard without even being aware which movie this song is from.
So here is this immortal song from “Hatimtai” (1956).
Song-Parwar digaar e aalam (Hatimtai) (1956) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Akhtar Romani, MD-S N Tripathi
Lyrics
parvardigaar-e-aalam
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
tere siwaa jahaan mein
koyi nahin hamaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
tere siwaa jahaan mein
koyi nahin hamaaraa
Parwar digaar e aalam
nooh kaa safinaa toone ae
toofaan se bachaayaa
duniyaa mein tu hameshaa
bandon ke kaam aayaa
maangi Khaleel ne jab
tujhse duaa Khudaayaa
aatish ko toone fauran
ek gulsitaan banaayaa
hat iltejaa ne teri
rahmat ko hai ubhaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
Younus ko toone machhli
ke pet se nikaalaa
toone hi mushqilon mein aen
Ayub ko sambhaalaa
Ilyaas par karam kaa
toone kiyaa ujaalaa
hai do jahaan mein yaa rab
teraa hi bol baalaa
toone sadaa ilaahi
bigdi ko hai sanwaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
Yousuf ko toone maulaa
di qaid se rihaayi
Yaaqoob ko dubaaraa
shaql-e-pisar dikhaayi
bahti huyi nadi mein
Moosaa ki raah banaayi
toone saleeb par bhi
Isaa ki jaan bachaayi
daataa tere karam kaa
koyi nahin kinaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
tere siwaa jahaan mein
koyi nahin hamaaraa
parvardigaar-e-aalam
parvardigaar-e-aalam
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
teraa hi hai sahaaraa
teraa hi hai sahaaraa

Yes Sir, I was just a lad of ten then.
The one cut-out that I specially remember is that of a bridge on which the Jadugar and Hatim Tai have their last fast, with a parrot hovering over. (Remember, that the life of the magician was supposed to be in that parrot).
Of course there was another memorable song, rather a duet: Jhoomti Hai Nazar Jhoomta Hai pyaar. Ah! What a romantic duet of Rafi-Asha!
A forgotten song but which has registered with me was: Oui Amma mai.n kaahe ko baazaar gayi theeh…..(perhaps Shamshad Begum’s). This is because of the funny situation where Hatim Tai’s sidekick is dressed as a woman who has been sent as a meal for the Jinn.

While it’s true that Hatim Tai (1956-57) is chiefly remembered by the song: PARWAR-DIGAAR-E-AALAM, it will not be correct to say that the movie was a C-Grade movie. Shakila was already a star name in mid-fifties and Jairaj’s was a respectable name. (He’s a winner of Dadasaheb Phalke Award).
Besides, when HATIM TAI was released in Bombay at the Novelty Theatre, there were huge cut-outs from the scenes of the movie all over the theatre. The movie was a silver-jubilee success.
In short, it was an A-Grade movie, much better than the later HATIM TAI or SAAT Sawaal.
