Jalta hai jiya mera

Posted on: March 18, 2009

“Zakhmee” (1975) had quite a few wonderful songs. For long I thought that these songs were composed by R D Burman. It was much later that I realised that this movie in fact was the debut movie of Bappi Lahiri as a music director.

I have posted a few songs from this movie already. Here is a song that was perhaps the most R D Burman like of them all. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and is picturised on Rakesh Roshan and Reena Roy in what must be a movie with flimsy storyline, going by the picturisation. The picturisation shows Rakesh Roshan and Reena Roy cooped up in a bedroom and the bad guys ( ?) trying to see what they are upto in that bedroom. And the singing duo decide to play along by singing this song.

Gauhar Kanpuri was the lyricist.

The song was quite popular. In fact it was perhaps the most popular song in a movie that had some nice popular songs.

Song-Jalta hai jiya mera (Zakhmee) (1975) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Gauhar Kanpuri, MD-Bappi Lahiri

Lyrics

Hmm
jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
he jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
he aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
hmm hmm haay re haay re haay re
hmm hmm haay re haay re haay re
jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
hmm haay re haay re haay re
hmm haay re haay re haay re

ghulabi ye pyaale
hain tere hawaale
tu bhi dil ki lagi ko bujhaale
ghulabi ye pyaale
hain tere hawaale
tu bhi dil ki lagi ko bujhaale
phir na aaye kabhi aisi raat
phir na aaye kabhi aisi raat
he he jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
hmm haay re haay re haay re
hmm haay re haay re haay re

pilaayi hai tumne
jo pyaase ko shabnam
dil ke shole bhala kaise hon kam
pilaayi hai tumne
jo pyaase ko shabnam
dil ke shole bhala kaise hon kam
banke baadal karo barsaat
banke baadal karo barsaat
ho ho jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
hmm haay re haay re haay re
hmm haay re haay re haay re

haay
na na na na
abhi ye fasana hamen na sunaana
dekho raaja kadam na badhaana
abhi ye fasana hamen na sunaana
dekho raaja kadam na badhaana
nahin chedo aisi waisi baat
nahin chedo aisi waisi baat
ho ho jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
jalta hai jiya mera bheegi bheegi raaton me
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
aaj gori chori chori ab to raha nahin jaye re
haay re haay re haay re
ho ho haay re haay re haay re
haay re haay re haay re

This song must have been fairly popular in its time, because I remembered the song just from listening to the opening notes, which was surprising even to me, because I don’t have it on any of my CDs or cassettes. It is a nice song with a good melody.

Tariq and Rakesh Roshan play brothers of Sunil Dutt. they have kinapped Reena Roy and have taken shelter in the cottage belonging to Agha and Pilloo Wadia. and when the elderly couple confront them they claim to be a couple with Tariq as the dewar. so the elder couple offer the 2 RRs the use of the master bedroom. and play peeping toms to make sure that they are indeed a couple.
that is the context of this song
