Man Mohana bade jhoothe

Posted on: March 23, 2009

“Seema” (1955) is a movie that launched Nutan’s career as a tragedy queen. I am sure Nutan may not have bargained for a career as a tragedy queen when she began her Bollywood career in early 1950s after becoming the first ever filmfare Miss India. Yes, Nutan won the Miss India award in 1952 in its inaugural edition.

Here is a semiclassical song from “Seema”. It is sung by Lata. This song was written by Shailendra and the music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan. This song is based on raag jaijaiwanti.

Song-man mohana bade jhoothe (Seema) (1955) Singer-Lata, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD- Shankar Jaikishan

Thanks for playing one of my all time Lata favorites. This song is incredible, and I took the trouble of finding out the raag it is based upon – Jaijaiwanti or Dwijavanti. I cannot say which was better, Lata’s rendition of the song, or Nutan’s emoting of the song. Apparently, Nutan herself had some classical background which was why she was able to perform so well in this scene – I read this somewhere.

Yes Lalitha, Nutan was a decent singer herself. It is such a beautiful number, you can just listen to it over and over…

The other day I heard this

sung by Anwesha, as a special request from someone in the audience.

As per radio programme “Raag Anuraag” broadcasted by Vividh Bharthi radio station today,
this “Seema”->Lata Solo:”Manmohana bade jhootey” is based on Classical raga :”JAIJAIWANTHI”, .

Hope I listened the name of raga correctly, because the broadcast was not very clear, If at all I am wrong, please knowledgeble people about classical raga, please correct me.

Can someone explain why this number was not used in the movie?
