Dil ki umangen hain jawaan

Posted on: April 27, 2009

This is a rare song from “Munimji” (1954). So rare in fact that I heard this song for the first time only yesterday. 😉

This is a comedy song sung by Geeta Dutt ( for Nalini Jaywant) and Hemant Kumar ( for Dev Anand). But the real attraction of this song is Pran, the villain , who is also made to sing and dance in this song.

Pran sings in this song too and being villain, he is supposed to have non -melodious voice. Here he has sung for himself and sings in a croaking voice meant to cause mirth among the listeners and watchers.

It is a rare song, not very well known, and this song is certainly a song worthy of being brought to the notice of Bollywood movie lovers. It was written by Sahir Ludhianvi and its music was composed by S D Burman.

Song-Dil ki umangen hain jawaan (Munimji)(1954) Singers-Geeta Dutt ,Pran, Hemant Kumar, Lyrics- Sahir Ludhianvi , MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

aap bhi gaayiye naa
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
gaayiye na
kya mushkil hai
sargam bataaun
pa ma pa dha pa ga sa pa
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
gaayiye
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
bahut acche
rang me dooba hai samaa
waah waah waah
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
rang mein doobaa hai samaa
maine tumhen jeet liyaa
haar ke donon jahaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
aaa haha ha ha ha ha ha
gaayiye gaayiye gaayiye
o ho ho o ho ho
aa haa aa ha ha
o ho ho ho ho
kyaa kahne

o o o
o o o o
sadiyon puraani ye zameen
hai aaj itni haseen
sadiyon puraani zameen
sadiyon puraani zameen
hai aaj itni haseen
aata nahin hai yaqeen
hotaa nahin hai bayaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
aap bhi gaayiye
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
rang me doobaa hai samaa
jiyo jiyo
maine tumhe jeet liyaa
un hoon
maine tumhe jeet liyaa
haar ke donon jahaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan

o o o
o o o
bheege nazaaron se kaho
gaati phuhaaron se kaho o o
bheege nazaaron se kaho
bheege nazaaron se kaho
gaati phuhaaron se kaho
jaati bahaaron se kaho
ruk jaayen aaj yahaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
gaayiye naa
kyaa mazaa aa rahaa hai
hmm hmm hmm
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
rang meindoobaa hai samaa
maine tumhen jeet liyaa
haar ke donon jahaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan

o o o o o
o o o o o
bechain tanhaaiyaan
letin hain angdaaiyaan
bechain tanhaaiyaan
bechain tanhaaiyaan
letin hain angdaayiyaan
halki si shahnaayiyaan
bajtin hain jaane kahaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
gaayiye naa
ek baar aur
dil ki umangen hain jawaan
rang mein doobaa hai samaa

maine tumhen jeet liyaa
haar ke donon jahaan
dil ki umangen hain jawaan

aayiye naa aap bhi naachiye

dil ki umangen hain jawaan
rang mein doobaa hai samaa
maine tumhe jeet liyaa
un hoon maine tumhen jeet liyaa
haar ke donon jahaan
hmm hmm hmm

I think I have been more fortunate than you, Atul. Thanks to a local TV show here, we get two old B&W songs every week, and that was how I was introduced to this song from Munimji, as well as the song about Shiva’s wedding. After that, of course, I had to borrow the movie and watch it at home, when I discovered the remaining songs. I really love the part at the end of this song when they send Pran off on the donkey!

Well, to be honest, many such movies are there lying with me including “Muninji” and I cannot find time to watch them. Spending three hours is too much of a time for one movie.

I love this song (called it out on my review of the film ;-)…so hilarious. Pran is awesome.

Its not Pran singing but Mr. Thakur sings for Pran

Yamini ji,

You are correct in a way that the record label carries the name of the third singer as ‘Thakur’. However, it is also on record in an interview long back – Pran himself has stated that he sang for himself in this song.

It is now finally clarified by Hamraz ji in his Listeners’ Bulletin No. 194 of December-2022, that one T.B.Desai has sung that piece on the record. However it is also now accepted, based on Pran’s own admission, that he sang for the film version. Recently there was a discussion on RMIM about it also.

This song is a visual treat and without the video clip, this song loses luster.
