Ham aaj kahin dil kho baithe

I wonder just how many piano songs are there in “Andaaz” (1949). I have posted more than half a dozen such songs already from this movie.
Here is yet another piano song from “Andaaz” where Dilip Kumar sits at the piano at night and sings this song. And Nargis arrives with her pet dog and watches Dilip Kumar sing the song, clutching her dog like a pillow.
This song, “ham aaj kahin dil kho baithe” is sung by Mukesh. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Naushad composed the music. This is one of the “lesser” known songs from this movie. At least I was not awre that this song belonged to this movie.
This is the ninth song from this movie that I have posted so far. There are many more still to come. I wonder if the actors ( more specifically Dilip Kumar) had any time left in this movie for non singing activities. 😉
This song is based on one of the lesser known raagas- viz raag Malgunji.

So that is the story. Now I know why he keeps playing the piano all the time. Being the estate manager must have been quite a cushy job for him.

I love this song. Thanks, Atul, for posting so many Andaaz songs. It was a landmark film of its time, given the big names involved.

By the way, Atul, I just discovered that Raj Kapoor does sing one song in Andaz, actually a duet with Nargis, in Rafi’s voice – “yoon to aapas mein …”. I guess I had forgotten all about it!
It is amazing that Naushad could produce so many great songs in one movie and yet there are scores of movies these days with not even one song that one remembers after the movie is over.

Yes, Rafi too sang in this movie. But that song is largely unknown.

Atul, to me this is the most famous and best song from this movie! I love all the three Mukesh songs – this one, toote na dil toote na, and Tu kahe agar! Incidentally, Dilip is the manager of the estate owned by Nargis’s dad, and his other activity is rescuing Nargis whenever her horse runs away with her holding the reins! If I remember right, he sings this song after his first rescue of Nargis.
I just love all the songs of Andaz! Thanks for the daily treat, Atul!
