Chinchpokli Chinchpokli

Posted on: December 29, 2012

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The name of SHABISTAN evokes the memories of a very handsome and jovial actor-SHYAM.

He died during the final scene shooting of this film while riding a horse. Actually, Shyam was an expert rider and the horse was also the same, usual one. Everything was the same but the Time had come for Shyam to go…

He was immediately taken to Hospital, but he died while still unconcious and with his make up stii on…

( The same was the case of actor GOPE also. He too died on sets shooting for the film ‘Teesari gali’-1958. He had a massive heart attack. Coincidence was, he had just delivered a dialogue , ‘ Main oopar jaa raha hoon..’.)

Gope atleast was older and too fat, but Shyam was still young-just 31 years old.(Born-20-5-1920 Died 25-4-1951) and fit and healthy.

SHYAM was also an ideal example how similar names in HF industry caused confusion. He was active in the same period when the other actor/singer Shyam Kumar was operative. In film Dillagi” Shyam Kumar gave playback to Shyam in the song Tu mera chand main teri chaandni and it became a hit. It also gave rise to a misunderstanding that actor Shyam also sang his own songs-which is NOT TRUE.

They were 2 different persons.

SHYAMSUNDER CHADHA was from Lahore. He lost his mother when he was just two years old, but his stepmother brought him up with the same mother’s love, inspite of having her own children.

Shyam loved his stepmother and the siblings very much and looked after them till the end. They too loved him equally.

The first tier of actors like DEV, RAJ and DILIP ruled the industry, but the second tier of actors like Shyam and Rehman were more handsome and had their own fans.

Shyam was not a great actor but his luck was great. He always worked with beautiful Heroines like,Suraiya, Nargis, Poornima, Rehana, Geeta Nizami, Munawwar Sultana, Nigar Sultana etc. His films always had good songs too.

Shyam was married to Taaji Yasmin and had two daughters. Shyam was a colourful personality and he had many affairs. Finally his wife Taaji left him and went to Pakistan with two daughters.(Writer Saadat Hasan Manto gives a lucid account of Shyam’s affairs in his book ‘Stars from another sky’).

Shyam was a good friend of Omprakash who hailed from the same Mohalla of Lahore. He was also a favourite of Kardar and acted in many of his films.

Shyam could not sing outside his Bathroom and never sang in any film.

The singer actor SHYAM KUMAR’s name was Syed Gul Hamid, who was born and brought up in Poona. He sang many songs, gave playback to many actors, but NEVER sang for himself in any film till the last.

He started as a Hero in 4 films, but then got side and character or villain roles in films.

He stopped singing in films from 1952, but continued acting in films. He had acted in more than 50 films from 1942(Sukhi Jeevan) to 1976 (Dus Numbari). He died on 22-4-1981 in Bombay. His daughter Zarina also acted in films in the 80s.

The heroine of SHABISTAN was NASEEM BANO.

She was born in Delhi on 2-1-1919 as Roshan Ara Begum. She was so beautiful that she was called PARI CHEHRA NASEEM BANO.

She started acting in films with Sohrab Modi’s film Hamlet (khoon ka khoon)-1935 till her last film Nawab Sirajuddoula-1967. After this she had briefly appeared in Kabhie Kabhie in 1976.

Initially, she sang her own songs. Her songs from film Pukar-1938 were very popular (Zindagi ka saaz bhi kya saaz hai ), however after 1947, she stopped singing. She was married to Producer Ehsaan. Saira Bano is her daughter.

Dilip Kumar has acted as a Hero opposite Naseem Bano AND Saira Bano, both.

The music Director for Shabistan were C.Ramchandra and Madan Mohan. They composed 4 songs each in the film.

While Madan Mohan rarely composed with other MDs, C.Ramchandra composed in three more films with Vasant Desai, under the name of Vasant Ramchandra-

Kalakar-54

Saavdhan-54 and

Suhagan-54

(There was another same name Jodi- Vasant Pawar and Ram Vadhavkar who also gave music to 3 films- Shivleela-52,Nanhe munne-52 and Mahatma-53. They were called Vasant-Ram).

MADAN MOHAN was a gifted composer. So much has been written about him on this Blog and elsewhere, that I will not repeate it. Madan mohan started his Music career by singing/recording two Ghazals each in 1947 and 1948, before “Aankhen” (1951), his first film as a full fledged music director was released.

Later Madan Mohan gave Playback in 4 songs in films, in his career.

1.Humse na dil ko lagana-with Shamshad in Aankhen -50

2.Chinchpokli-with Shamshad in Shabistan-51

3.Koi ek aana-with Rafi in Dhun-53 and

4.mere jaisa-with Rafi and kishore kumar in Fifty fifty-56

Today, we will hear the funny song ‘ Chinchpokli…’ from this film sung by Madan Mohan and Shamshad begum. The lyrics are by Qamar Jalalabadi. This song is almost 7.5 minute long and it is on both sides of the 78 RPM record No. N-36873.

SHABISTAN-51 was a Filmistan production, directed by Bibhuti mitra( 1-1-1915 to 14-3-1989 ),a veteran of about 20 films from 1941 to 1972 (including Phagun-58 and Ji chaahta Hai-64).It was a costume drama set in imaginary kingdoms.

There is a war between Kalindi and Kishkindha kingdoms, in which Kalindi is defeated. The maharaja is captured. He can only be released if his daughter Shibani(Naseem Bano) marries the crown prince of kKiskindha. Shibani is already in love with Timir (Shyam), but to save her father and his kingdom, she decided to sacrifice her love and is ready to marry the prince. Ashit Baran, the younger brother of the prince is a crook and wants to usurp the Throne. He drugs the prince and kidnaps him with the help of a beautiful dancer Nilima. This way, he ensures that prince will be absent for coronation and he will get the throne. The loyal Prime Minister of Kishkindha, Falguni, learns about this plan. By a stroke of luck, he meets Timir, who is a look alike of the crown prince. Falguni convinces him and dresses him up as the crown Prince and presents him for Coronation. Ashit Baran is stunned, but can not do anything. He decides to Kill Timir, but he is saved everytime. Falguni also keeps an eye on Timir so that he does not run away. Shibani recognises Timir as the fake Prince. She wants to elope with him, but Timir refuses and reminds her about her Father’s freedom.

Meanwhile Nilima, the dancer is fed up of the false promises of Ashit Baran to make her the queen and spills the beans. Ashit wages a war against his brother. There is a fight between them in which Timir kills Ashit Baran. The Maharaja of Kalindi and the real Crown Prince are rescued. Shibani isa ready to marry him, but the Crown Prince refuses and Timir is married to her. The kingdom of Kalindi is also returned to the maharaja and all is well.

Arunji,
What a post! Clearing the confusion between actor and singer of the same name. I also was one of that fan of Shyam thinking he sang the song of Dillagi. It was only after I read comment (may be by you only) on this blog few months back, the matter was clear. Like you have said, song is funny. Never knew that Madan Mohan sang four songs in the movie. One question- was the song Mai ri main kaase kahoon peer….. sung by MM included in the movie Dastak? CD does have the song him. Can you please clear my doubt?
Thanks.

Khyati ji,
Thanks for liking the post.
The film DASTAK had only 4 songs. 3 by Lata and 1 by Rafi.
Mai ri…was sung by Lata, even in the film.
Madan Mohan did sing some of Lata’s songs himself for his private pleasure and sometimes to fill up for Lata as she was not available at the time of recording the song for shooting purposes(later she would sing the song for commercial records and it was put in the film.)
Such songs of Madan Mohan are available and may be one was included in his CD.Anyway,Mai ri was not in the film in MM’s voice.
The inlay of the CD cover may give this info.

Thanks Arunji for clearing my doubts/confusion. May I ask for a post about artists with the same name but different spelling? I remember in one of the post you did clear the doubt about Radhakishan and Radha Krishan or something like that. Sorry, bhool gayi kab padhha thha.
Thanks.

Arunji,
Yes, you are right. I meant Radha Kishen and Radhakrishan (?) It was one song, in which we were trying to label/recognize one of the artist who was Radha Kishen. Yaad nahin aara hai wo kaun sa gaana thha.

Khyati ji,
I have written several times about confusions created by same-name artists and have quoted number of examples.
Sometimes the actors themselves make slight changes in the names or initials etc to differentiate themselves from the other actor.
One example immediately comes to mind is about actors Najmul Hussain of Bombay Talkies. There was another artist/continuity man
with the same name najmul hussain. When actor Najmul Hussain eloped with Devika Rani, the other najmul hussain quickly changed his name to NAJAM NAQVI.later he bacame a big Director and continued with name Najam naqvi till the last.
If you remember, once I had quoted names of 5 actresses with name NALINI,operating in the same period,in early eras, some of them added their surnames to mark the difference like Nalini Jayawant,Nalini Tarkhad,Nalini Nagpurkar etc etc
Another common name causing trouble was KHURSHID.I think there must have been not less than 5 to 6 Khurshids.Even actress Shyama’s real name was Khurshid.
Radhakishen might have been really Radhakrishna-I dont know-but he was always known and credited as Radhakishen
I have lost count how many times I wrote about 2 SHYAMs,on different blogs, sites and elsewhere.

A very good informative post, Arunji.

I believe, however, that it was Naseem (most probably Naseem Chopra) who acted as Amitabh’s daughter in Kabhi Kabhie.

Naseem Bano, most likely came back from retirement to act in only one movie, Pakeezah.

Like

bluefire ji,
You seem to be right.
The Naseem who acted in kabhi kabhie-1976 in the role of Sweety
malhotra is NOT this Naseem Bano.Naseem Bano last appeared on screen in Pakeezah is correct.
Thanks for the correction.
(an example of same name confusion)

Arun-ji, first of all, I must congratulate you for a superb write-up. Also for distinguishing between two Shyams. And for the write-up on Madan Bhayya. And for a wonderful song. Can’t imagine MM singing this song!!

The Dastak number ” Maire . . .” appeared on the MM memorium LP issued soon after his death. MM stops singing amd Lataji takes over from where MM has left off. Superb!!

Arun Sir, Excellent write up of this song, actor Shyam and giving details of actors with same name. HFGK revised version has corrected the composer’s name. Looking forward for more such interesting articles.
