Dilli se aaya bhai Tingu

Posted on: May 9, 2009

I have posted two superb songs from “Ek Thi Ladki” (1949). This movie was far far ahead of its time, and that can be said about its music too.

One of the songs from this movie , viz “Laara lappaa laara lappa” has gone on to become an iconic song. Other songs of this movie, though forgotten by now, are very interesting songs in their own right.

Here is a comedy song from this movie. It goes “Dilli se aaya bhai Tingu”. It is written by Aziz Kashmiri and the music is composed by Vinod.

The lovely voice belongs to Sulochana Kadam, and the lovely lady who sings the song in the movie is Meena Shorey.
PS-I am having doubts on rechecking the video. Meena Shorey was tall and big built, and the lady singing this song is quite petite. So may be she is some other lady. Any idea who she may be ?
Now I know that she is Kuldeep Kaur. I thank Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh for this information.

I always wondered who this music director Vinod was. My prayers are answered in this song. The person who is shown directing the musicians in this song is none other than Vinod himself.

This song and its picturisation is lovely. It must be one of the earlier songs where western rock and roll music was used in Bollywood movies.

PS-Now it turns out that the singer and actor of this song is Honey O’Brien. Here is what the reader Arunkumar Deshmukh has dug up on this matter-

“The great Bollywood song mystery solved !

For nearly 60 years, the singer’s identity of “Dilli se aaya Bhai Tingoo” was shrouded in mystery.Various names were advanced like Geeta Dutt,Meenal Wagh and Sulochana Kadam.None of them,by themselves committed anything, except Sulochana Chavan, who, for reasons best known to her claimed to have sung this song.
There was curiosity even in Pakistani old film music lovers about it.
‘SHAMA’ is a popular and prestigious film journal of Lahore.Mr.U.Siddiqui has written in it,” Once Vinod himself said that his neice,Honey O’brien has sung this song.Recently,Honey o’brien was traced in Geneva,Switzerland, where she has settled after her 3 daughters’ marriages.Honey confirmed that SHE has sung this song and also it was shot on her in the movie.Honey has featured in a song of Awara also(Ek bewafa se pyar huwa). The entire song is on her.
“Honey acted in some 15 films during 40s and 50s before marriage.”
so,once for all the matter is clear.”

Further update from Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh

I have come accross an article in ‘Listener’s Bulletin No 134 published in July 2007.
In this article, the following is mentioned-
” When Vinod heard Vinita Raghavendra Amladi sing a song,he was impressed and gave her a chance to sing in the chorus of song ‘Lara Lappa’,in which she had few lines also.
Then he said,I have now only one song left, you sing this. The song was ‘Dilli se aaya bhai Tingu’..”
Thus the song was sung by VINITA AMLADI.
when Vinod,in an interview had said, that Honey has sung it,probably he meant Honey has sung it on the screen,as even then no one knew who was the screen singer, and even Honey also must have meant that.

Vinita Amladi later married Krishna Chakravarty, the pianist from the orchestra and shifted to Calcutta, where ,in typical Bangla way, her name became BINOTA CHAKRABORTY

What painstaking tracking of elusive information by our own beloved walking encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh. so finally we can conclude that this song is sung by Vinita Amladi, later known as Binota Chakraborty.

The actress singing this song on screen is KULDEEP KAUR,who was sort of villain in the movie, competing with Meena Shorey for Motilal’s love.

Thank a lot for this information.

When looking at a recent comment in youtube, it is mentioned that the song is picturised on Honey O Brien and that she is the singer of this song as well.

There seems to be some confusion in You tube, because every album of Sulochana Kadam features this song as her song.Even in a recent TV interview she had mentioned about this song. The actress is positively Kuldeep Kaur.

The great Bollywood song mystery solved !

Atul ji,
You were right.I stand corrected about my earlier comments. If I had not come accross this Shama issue recently, the truth may have still been hidden.

It is great that the fact is clarified once and for all. Thanks for the information contained about Honey O Brien in the magazine “Shama”. This corroborates the independently stated fact that Honey O Brien was the singer and actor for this song.

Sulochana Chavan might have sung a version song of this.May be that is why she claims that it is her song.
This is a possibility.

Atul ji,

Thanks for this information. So this little known article on Listener’s bulletin helps bring new facts about the identity of the singer of this song.

Atul ji,
I am very glad to inform you that I just now recd.an EMail from Respected Shri Surjit singh ji and he confirms that the info given in the interview is CORRECT.
So,finally, the mystery seems to be over(atleast for now !)
My hard work and follow up on this song has really paid up.I am glad.

Indeed, kudos to you for your tireless efforts to get to the root of the matter. Now thanks to your tracking, we can finally (hopefully) say that this song is sung by Vinita Amladi aka Binota Chakraborty.

Arun ji,

Thanks for your efforts – yes, it is a difficult task to track down less known artists, especially when the films are so many decades old. As time passes, the sources of information on such things become more and more scarce. Every such confirmation is an accomplishment in the interest of authentically documenting the history of this art form.

Thanks again 🙂

Rgds
Sudhir

Wow, so much of research goes into these articles. Amazing. Hats off Arun Ji!

Hats off to everyone for tracking the real singer of this song.

ho bedardi aur lohaar?

isn’t it “dhobi, darzi, aur lohaar”?
