Pyaar par bas to nahin hai

I have listened to this song in the past, but that was without knowing any details about this song. The details of this song come as quite a surprise, and a pleasant one at that.
For starters, this song is from “Sone Ki chidiya” (1958). Talat Mehmood is not only the singer, he in fact is the hero of this movie as well. On screen he sings this romantic song to Nutan. The humming by Nutan is in the voice of Asha Bhonsle.
Sahir Ludhianvi wrote the lyrics. It is quite a surprise to me to note that O P Nayyar was the music director of this movie. I was not aware that O P Nayyar ever worked with Talat Mehmood. This Talat Mehmood song in fact sounds like it was composed by Madan Mohan or Ravi or S D Burman etc, but I could not have guessed it to be O P Nayyar.
All these details makes this song an interesting song. So here is this lovely song from “Sone Ki Chhidiya”.
PS-Now I am informed that this song is a multiple version song and that it has an Asha Bhonsle solo version too.

It is indeed a pleasant surprise that O P Nayyar made use of Talat Mahmood’s voice.

Why should OP Nayyar’s use of Talat be a surprise? Talat is the hero of the movie!!! Earlier, Talat sang “Mujhe dekho hasrat ki tasveer hoon main” from the movie Baaz which has music by OP Nayyar.

Lovely song! Hearing it for the first time today. I feel the duet version is just a solo Talat version, as all Asha / Nutan does is hum a tune and not actually sing :).

Interesting that you thought it wasn’t composed by O P Nayyar! Here’s some info I found on the Web! One Mr. Surender Bhutani (Warsaw, Poland) has posted about 8 months ago: “The real composer of this amazing song is Khayyam Saheb who was compelled to sell this tune to O.P. Nayyar. Khayyam was short of money at that time.This was told to me by Meena Kapoor, wife of Anil Biswas.”

Whatever be the facts behind this great composition. I think we should honor and respect the decision by these great genius all who have given us timeless classics forever.

तलतजी के “प्यार पर बस तो नहीं है” गाने के लिए बहुत सारे और अच्छे रिप्लाई मिले हैं, बहुत अच्छी बात है, लेकिन मुझे लगता है कि मैं जो अब बताने जा रहा हूं, वो जानकर आप सब चौंक जाएंगे, और बहुत ही ख़ुशी से उछल पड़ोगे…..
मैंने बरसों पहले कहीं पढ़ा था कि ओ.पी.नैयर ने अपनी खुद की पसंद के गानों की एक टोप-१० की लिस्ट बनाई थी, जिसमें सबसे ज्यादा पसंद गानों का नंबर -१ तलतजी के इस गाने को दिया था
