Ik bewafa se pyaar kiyaa usse nazar ko chaar kiyaa

Posted on: August 30, 2009

This is a song that I must have heard many a times. It is a timeless classic. And considering that this song is from “Aawaara”(1951) and it is sung by Lata, I took it for granted that this song was picturised on Nargis.

Just now I watched the picturisation of this song for the first time. It is a party song. Nargis is very much there, so is Prithviraj Kapoor.

But no, the song is not picturised on Nargis. As the song begins, we find a sari clad gori dancing and singing this song. Who is she ? Apparently she is someone called Honey O’Brian. But I think I will need some confirmation about her identity from the knowledgeable readers here.

The song was written by Hasrat Jaipuri and music was composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Lyrics

ik bewafaa se pyaar kiyaa
us se nazar ko chaar kiyaa
haay re hamne ye kyaa kiyaa
haay kyaa kiyaa
ik bewafaa se pyaar kiyaa
us se nazar ko chaar kiyaa
haay re hamne ye kyaa kiyaa
haay kyaa kiyaa

bholi soorat waalaa niklaa luteraa
raat chhupaaye dil mein munh pe saweraa
bholi soorat waalaa niklaa luteraa
raat chhupaaye dil mein munh pe saweraa
hoy hamne dil nisaar kiyaa usko bekaraar kiya
haay re hamne ye kyaa kiyaa

ik bewafaa se pyaar kiyaa
us se nazar ko chaar kiyaa
haay re hamne ye kyaa kiyaa

de gayi dhokhaa hamen neeli neeli aankhen
neeli neeli aankhen
de gayi dhokhaa hamen neeli neeli aankhen
neeli neeli aankhen
sooni hai dil ki mahfil bheegi bheegi aankhen
ho bheegi bheegi aankhen
hoy hamne aitbaar kiya
ulfat ka ikraar kiyaa
haay re hamne ye kyaa kiyaa

us se nazar ko chaar kiyaa
haay re hamne ye kyaa kiyaa
haay kyaa kiyaa

No idea, Atul, it could be Honey O’Brien in this song.
But if you had told me it was Indira Gandhi, I might have believed you. 🙂 It looks remarkably like her.

Nice song though possibly the least-known song of the movie.

Hahaha. Yes, Indiara Gandhi must have looked like that those days.

Maybe it’s me, in my life before this one!!!! 😀

Dattaram played the dholak for the first time in this song. He was already assisting Shankar Jaikishan but had not actually played in a song before.

Dattaram played regularly for SJ but also played dholak in songs like “Ghadi Ghadi” and “Aaja re pardesi” for Salil Choudhary in Madhumati.

This song is where it all started…

Thanks a lot for this valuable information about Dattaram.

I really laud your research. I couldn’t find an accurate answer such as this after scrolling so many sites. Even wiki doesn’t make a mention of it when it finds worth mentioning a peek-a-boo of premnath blink of miss it cameo. Once again my congrats.

Honey O’Brian is dancing here. Honey O’Brien was an Indian actress and dancer in the 1940s and 1950s, performing in films like Ek Thi Ladki (1949) and Afsana (1951). She appeared in a few films and is recognized for her performances in songs, though her filmography is considered somewhat rare.
