Yaad aa gayi wo nasheeli nigaahen

Posted on: September 16, 2009

I found Greta (Memsaab) discussing some sharaabi songs in her blog and that set me thinking. Obviously there must be a large number of such songs, and I too have posted many such songs in this blog. But there must be countless more.

As if on cue, I stumbled upon this dipsomaniac song from “Manzil” (1960). This song had Dev Anand heavily drunk and singing in Hemant Kumar’s voice. Unlike many drunkard songs, where the singing voice is steady, even when the character is supposed to be punch drunk, this song is sung convincingly by Hemant Kumar, and he sings it the way a drunkard would sound.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and S D Burman is the music director.

Considering that I was not aware of this song till now, this song may be a relatively rarer song. Or may be this speaks more about my ignorance than the rarity of this song itself. In any case, I am happy to have stumbled upon this gem of a song.

According to HFGK, this song has one happy version and one sad version. The movie appears to have one Romantic (happy version) whereas two sad versions- one shows Dev Anand singing in a drunk condition and another where he is seen singing in a stage infront of housefull audience.

This film, though not as popular as other Dev Anand- Nutan films had some very good songs, because of which it ran fairly well. This song was of course classic.

Music Director S.D.Burman, had this ability of choosing the right singer for the song he composed. Picturisation of the song, the lip movement of the hero synchronizing with the lyrics, bringing out right emotions all made the songs memorable.

I just realised that S D Burman used quite a few singers to sing for Dev Anand, viz Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Hemant Kumar. There may be a few more too.

Yes. Talat mahmood “Jayen to Jayen Kahan” from the film Taxi Driver.

Yes, I had forgotten about Talat Mehmood. So it means that S D Burman used five different singers to sing for Dev Anand, viz- Talat Mehmood, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar !

Who knows, he may have used Mukesh too.

I know that other music directors have used Mukesh as the voice of Dev Anand.

Ghulam Mohd. used the voice of Mukesh beautifully for Dev Anand in Shair–Ye Duniya Hai Yahan Dil Ka Lagana Kis Ko Aata Hai. I am not aware about other MDs

If you add “vahaan kaun hai tera musaafir jaayega kahaan” by dada himself from guide, then you will have six singers.

No complaints about the song. A great one by HK. But in the song scene( Stage SCene) the mike is kept away from the singer Dev Aanand just as an unavoidable nuisance. . But still the voice is clearly heard.Must have been a highly sensitive mike.

S D Burman ,using Mukesh in background song on Dev Anand.

Even S-J, used Talat Mehmood and Hemant Kumar for Dev Anand in Patita 1953.
