Maazandaraan Maazandaraan

Posted on: October 7, 2009

I became aware of this song only recently when I read a review of “Rustam Sohrab” (1963) at MemsaabStory . The Prince of Turannak hatches a plot to Kidnap the Shah of Iran at the behest of the king of Mazandaraan. The prince goes to Shah’s court disguised as a poet and sings praises of Mazandaraan. The song suitably impresses the Shah and he, throwing cautions to the winds , accompanies the disguised prince to Mazandaraan. Here he is suitably underwhelmed to find that the promised land was nothing but desert. To add insult to injury, he is kidnapped too.

Here is this song that the disguised prince sings in the court of Shah of Iran. Talat Mehmood sings this song which is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar. Music is composed by Sajjad Hussain.

Lyrics

Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan
mere watan
mere jahaan
ai gulsitaan
jannat-nishaan
Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan

har phool teraa ik chaman
har shaakh hai naazuk dulhan
ai jaan-e-man
ai jaan-e-man
sadqe tere
sadqe tere ye jism-o-jaan
Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan

zarre hain tere yaa guhal
padti hain Shaahon ki nazar
laal o jawaahar is qadar
mumkin nahin
mumkin nahin
inka bayaan
Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan

ik qism ki mehfil hai tu
har shauk ki manzil hai tu
ham aashiqon ka dil hai tu
har waqt teri yaad sataaye
Maazandaraan
Maazandaraan

I always wondered what that word “Maazandaraan” meant, in fact, I used to think it was something else and I hadn’t heard it right! Now I know, thanks to your blog and Memsaabstory. It is a very soulful song, and does sound like it is describing a truly beautiful place.

Personally I was not even aware of this song till I read that review in Memsaabstory.

Every song in this film should be on here Atul 🙂 (I know you have two others already!) Honestly, they are each special. Am very happy to see this one now too! If you feel like translating the songs from this film I wouldn’t mind either (Raja has already done it for “Phir Tumhaari…”)!

Yes, I agree. In fact I agree that every song of Sajjad Hussain should be here. I am sure that you will not mind one bit if I do translations of untranslated lyrics.
