Shobhana Samarth, a leading actress of her time had launched her elder daughter Nutan through a home production called “Hamaari Beti”. When her younger daughter Tanuja too grew old enough to act in movies, Shobhana Samarth produced another movie called “Chhabili” (1960). In addition to Tanuja, Nutan and Shobhana Samarth had also acted in this movie.

Wow! What a sweet melodious song. I may have heard this song ealier, but only in passing and without paying close attention. This time, I listened to this song attentively and then wondered if this has to be one of the sweetest songs sung by Lata. If there are sweeeter songs still, I will definitely like to listen to them too.

Here is a very very old song from pre independence days when Noorjahaan still ruled the roost in Bollywood movie scene. Here is a song from a movie called “Dost” (1944). This song was very popular in its time.

Maazandaraan Maazandaraan

I became aware of this song only recently when I read a review of “Rustam Sohrab” (1963) at MemsaabStory . The Prince of Turannak hatches a plot to Kidnap the Shah of Iran at the behest of the king of Mazandaraan. The prince goes to Shah’s court disguised as a poet and sings praises of Mazandaraan. The song suitably impresses the Shah and he, throwing cautions to the winds , accompanies the disguised prince to Mazandaraan. Here he is suitably underwhelmed to find that the promised land was nothing but desert. To add insult to injury, he is kidnapped too.

Mythological movies,Historical movies and Arabian nights movies were regarded as B grade movies in Bollywood till 1970s. But many of these movies were produced with good production values. And when it came to their music, the music was as outstanding as any A grade movies.
