Balmaa khuli hawaa mein

Posted on: March 9, 2010

“Kashmir Ki Kali” (1964) is an out and out entertainer of an movie. Shammi Kapoor and debutant Sharmila Tagore, not to speak of Pran, Anoop Kumar and co make this movie a great fun to watch.

The lilting music of O Nayyar plays a huge part in the enjoyment of this movie. The songs of this movie (almost all of them) have gone on to become timeless classics.

Most people now may not realise that nowadays they watch this movie will two less songs than what was originally the case. When the movie was released in 1964, the movie had all the songs in it. After a week or so, two of the songs were removed from the movie. So unless one was lucky enough to watch the movie within a week of release of this movie, the movie goers have missed out on watching two fine songs.

“Balma Khuli hawaa mein” is one of these songs that were removed from the movie. The Indian censors those days used to be too puritanical (not to say Draconian). In this song, Sharmila Tagore prances around a lot in Kashmir. The Censors objected to the picturisation. In this song, Sharmila Tagore’s dupatta flies to her head instead to remaining where they should be (in censors view) and as a result of prancing around, her breasts heave a lot more than what they shoould (in Censors view). So Censors ordered the removal of this song from this movie !

Fortunately, the audio of these songs are available and we can at least listen to them.

Here is the audio of this song. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, and as mentioned above, the song was picturised on Sharmila Tagore. You have to take my (or Censors’) word for it. 😉

I hope that the video of this song is available somewhere, but I thing its chances are slim. We should at least be thankful that the censors did not ban the audio of this song.

Song-Balma khuli hawaa mein (Kashmir Ki Kali) (1964) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

balmaa khuli hawaa mein
mahki huyi fizaa mein
dil chaahtaa hai meraa
bahaknaa idhar udhar
balmaa khuli hawaa mein
mahki huyi fizaa mein
dil chaahtaa hai meraa
bahaknaa idhar udhar

pag pag chaloon balkhaati
khud bhi na jaanoon kahaan
pag pag chaloon balkhaati
khud bhi na jaanoon kahaan
kahtaa hai ye dil matwaalaa
aaj apnaa hai saaraa jahaan
ho ho ho ho
balmaa khuli hawaa mein
mahki huyi fizaa mein
dil chaahtaa hai meraa
bahaknaa idhar udhar

chhun chhun bole mori paayal
aajaa kahe saajnaa
chhun chhun bole mori paayal
aajaa kahe saajnaa
aajaa ke ye saare nazaare
sainyaa pheeke hain tere binaa
ho ho ho ho
balmaa khuli hawaa mein
mahki huyi fizaa mein
dil chaahtaa hai meraa
bahaknaa idhar udhar
balmaa khuli hawaa mein
