Tumhari mast nazar gar idhar nahin hoti

Posted on: May 1, 2010

In Bollywood movies, it is just the hero who gets drunk. Ladies getting drunk is not considered a proper thing. So it comes as a big surprise to find both of them drunk and singing this drunkard song.

This song is from “Dil Hi To Hai” (!963) and the actors in question are Raj Kapoor and Nutan. The song is sung by Mukesh and Lata. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and Roshan composed the music.

So here is this unusual drunkard song (by Bollywood standards) that goes “tumhari mast nazar gar idhar nahin hoti”. I was not aware of this song but for its farmaish by Raja. And I wonder how Raja felt about his favourite Nutan getting drunk in this picturisation, which is so much against the code of conduct of a Bhartiya Nari which Nutan epitomised on so many Bollywood movies.

Song-Tumhari mast nazar gar idhar nahin hoti (Dil Hi To Hai) (1963) Singer-Mukesh, Lata, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi,MD-Roshan

Lyrics

(hic!)
(hic!)

tumhaari mast nazar
tumhaari mast nazar
gar idhar nahin hoti
nashe mein choor fizaa
is qadar nahin hoti
tumhaari mast nazar
(hic!)
aaa aaa aaa
tumhi ko dekhne ki
dil mein aarzuen hain
tumhi ko dekhne ki
dil mein aarzuen hain
dil mein aarzuen hain
tumhaare aage hi oonchi
nazar nahin hoti
tumhaare aage hi oonchi
nazar nahin hoti
tumhaari mast nazar
(hic!)

khafaa na honaa agar
badh ke thaam loon daaman
khafaa na honaa agar
badh ke thaam loon daaman
badh ke thaam loon daaman
ye dil fareb khataa
jaan kar nahin hoti
ye dil fareb khataa
jaan kar nahin hoti

tumhaare aane talak
ham ko hosh rahtaa hai
tumhaare aane talak
ham ko hosh rahtaa hai
ham ko hosh rahtaa hai
phir us ke baad hamen
kuchh khabar nahin hoti
phir us ke baad hamen
kuchh khabar nahin hoti
tumhaari mast nazar
gar idhar nahin hoti
nashe mein choor fizaa
is qadar nahin hoti

Aaahhh…my favourite Nutan. 🙂
Just love her in this movie, like I did in Paying Guest and Tere Ghar Ke Saamne.
When I saw this movie some years ago, I knew a lot of songs from it already. But not this one. I loved it the moment I saw it. The tune is lovely – and this is good-spirited, happy drinking (much like “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar”), not “main tumhen aur tumhare khandaan ko badnaam karna chaahti hoon” (I want to dishonour you and your family) drinking that you see in many movies. 🙂

It was really nice to see Nutan having fun in this movie. I just love her (though I think she got slotted into those suffering “mera pati mera devta hai” roles. I believe in real life she was quite different from this image).

And I find her really beautiful. You just have to see her eyes and that smile in “tujhe kya sunaaon main dilruba” (Aakhri Dao). If she were alive today, I would sing this song to her. 😉

this song rarely played on vividh bharati…but almost every morning on radio ceylon..
a sudden pop up and pop up and pop up, gushing out of garden (water) fountain again and again…film editor must like that fountain scene

@Raja,
How I hope that I too had a “love affair” with an old timer actress.

@Derubala,
If you recall this song being played in Radio Cylon then that makes you in the same age bracket as Raja and I. Please keep sharing your experiences of those days. I love nostalgia posts dealing with those days of Radio Ceylon.
