The title of this movie called “Ek Phool Chaar Kaante” (1960) looks traditional enough, but I am only just discovering that the music of this movie was anything but the usual stuff.
Apart from traditional kinds of songs that were the staple diet of Bollywood movies those days, this movie also had “western” music based songs and there the music directors had liberally borrowed from the popular music of the west.
Here is a song from this movie that is out and out a “western” music based song. Rafi sings this song with gusto. This is a song that was crying out to be picturised on Shammi Kapoor, but it is picturised on Sunil Dutt. Watching Sunil Dutt letting his hair down Shammi Kapoor style (it is more like Elvis Presley style) is a new experience for most movie watchers.
The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Writinga Hinglish song, which was then considered an infradig must have been a new experience for him.
Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
This song was a long pending farmaish of Raja.As far as I am concered, I had only read about this song, and the first time that I heard this song was yesterday. And I loved listening and watching to this song. This song, though 50 years old, is such racy and fast paced song that can cause the listeners to dance even today.

Lyrics
O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa

O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
sunjaa

haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
sunjaa
ik nazar ne teri maar diyaa
is adaa ne teri loot liyaa
kis khataa ka badlaa liyaa
ye bataa
na sataa

O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
O meri baby doll

arre kuchh to bol
dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
sunjaa
phir mujhe wo jalwaa dikha
phir se ik dafaa muskuraa
phir se mujhpe bijli giraa
ab to aa
aa bhi jaa
ab to aa
aa bhi jaa
aa bhi jaa
O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
sunjaa
mast mast teri shokiyaan
zulf ki ye kaali badliyaan
le udengin ye aandhiyaan
dil mera
dil mera
dil meraa
kho gayaa
kho gayaa
aaa
O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
O meri baby doll
haan yaa naa
arre kuchh to bol
dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
sunjaa
ho
dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
mere dil ki baat
sunjaa

This is wonderful, and I think Sunil Dutt actually did a credible job of it 🙂 You might even like the film, it’s a lot of fun.
