O sajnaa barkhaa bahaar aayi

on:This is one song that I thought I had already posted but I was wrong, and this fact was pointed out to me by some readers too.
So here is this song from “Parakh” (1960). This song “O sajnaa barkhaa bahaar aayi ras ki phuhaar aayi” is bound to give the listeners goosebumps. This is a rain song par excellence. Everything about this song is outstanding. Shailendra’s lyrics are the real star of this song, I feel and then the music of Salil Chaudhary and the voice of Lata create a heady cocktail. And the song is picturised nicely on Sadhana, then a newcomer.
Whenever I listen to this song, I am spellbound, such is the magic of this song. Music including sitar and tabla, Lata’s voice, Shailendra’s lovely lyrics- they do not ( and cannot) make songs like this anymore.
This song is a gem and I am happy that I have finally been able to include this song in the blog.

Lyrics
o sajna
o sajna
barkha bahaar aayi
ras ki phuhaar laayi,
ankhiyon mein pyaar laayi
o sajna
barkha bahaar aayi
ras ki phuhaar laayi,
ankhiyon mein pyaar laayi
o sajna
tum ko pukaare
mere man kaa papeehara
tum ko pukaare
mere man kaa papeehara
meethhi-meethhi agni mein
jale mora jiyara
o sajna
barkha bahaar aayi
ras ki phuhaar laayi
ankhiyon mein pyaar laayi
o sajna
aisi rim-jhim mein o sajan
pyaase pyaase mere nayan,
tere hi khwaabon mein kho gaye
aisi rim-jhim mein o sajan
pyaase pyaase mere nayan
tere hi khwaabon mein kho gaye
saanwli saloni ghata
jab jab chhaayi
saanwli saloni ghata
jab jab chhaayi
ankhiyon men raina gayi,
nindiya na aayi
o sajna
barkha bahaar aayi
ras ki phuhaar laayi,
ankhiyon mein pyaar laayi
o sajna
barkha bahaar aayi
ras ki phuhaar laayi
ankhiyon mein pyaar laayi
o sajna

I remember this song from my childhood. Not understanding the lyrics, its been a favorite based just on the music and Lata’s voice. Now my hindi is better and I follow the lyrics as well. This song along with some other Lata melodies (I’m compiling a list of her best songs) needs to go in a doomsday vault.

Salilda composed a bengali song ‘ Na Jeona , Rajani Ekhon O Baaki ‘ ( Don’t Go , There is Night Stll Left ) in 1959 . Tune of this Bengali song he reused in ‘ O Sajna Barkha Bahaar Aayi ‘ . Salilda himself wrote the lyrics of the aforementioned Bengali song .

Tonight is definitely my lucky night! All my favorite songs are here, and of course, this one tops the list. It brings back to mind rainy days and nights in Nainital, this song coming out of the radio, looking out of the window at the rain, all wrapped up in a blanket, and hot cocoa lovingly given by my mother. What more could one ask for? Thank you so much for this song and all the lovely memories it brings back to me!
