Main hoon Johny badaa toofaani

Posted on: September 17, 2010

I maintain that some of the most memorable O P Nayyar compositions have been picturised not on regular heroes, but on a comedian, viz Johny Walker. In some of these movies, Johny Walker in fact played the hero as well.

I am not sure whether Johny Walker was the hero in “Maai Baap” (1957). But he appears to have a lengthy role in this movie and his character in this movie is in fact is called Johny. Here is an “introduction” song from this movie, where Johny Walker, on insistence from Minu Mumtaz, informs her about himself.

It is a lovely light hearted song, sung by Rafi.Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist, and O P Nayyar’s music in this song is reminiscent of the music of “Howrah Bridge”. “Howrah Bridge” of course came later.

Here is this forgotten gem from “Maai Baap” (1958).

song-Main hoon Mister Johny (Maai Baap) (1957) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

main hoon Mister Johny
maine sab mulkon kaa piyaa hai paani
saari duniyaa ghoom-ghaam ke
banaa hoon Hindustaani
tum poochhoge kyun
main abhi bataataa hoon
main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
ho main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
main hoon Mister Johny
maine sab mulkon kaa piyaa hai paani
saari duniyaa ghoom-ghaam ke
banaa hoon Hindustaani
ho tum poochhoge kyun
main abhi bataataa hoon
main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
ho main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani

ek mulk ki suno kahaani
mili wahaan ik husn ki raani
jab tak thaa kaldaar jeb mein
tab tak thi har baat suhaani
ik din boli suno sanam
maal hazam aur khel khatam
chali gayi wo mujhe chhod kar
deke thandaa paani
main hoon Mister Johny
maine sab mulkon kaa piyaa hai paani
saari duniyaa ghoom-ghaam ke
banaa hoon Hindustaani
tum poochhoge kyun
main abhi bataataa hoon
main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
ho main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani

dooje mulk gayaa main yaar
mil gayi ik baanki sarkaar
khoob huaa pahle to pyaar
baad mein mujhko huaa bukhaar
ik din boli Johny yaar
ham jaataa tum hai beemaar
saath kisi ke bhaag gayi wo
dekar thandaa paani
main hoon Mister Johny
maine sab mulkon kaa piyaa hai paani
saari duniyaa ghoom-ghaam ke
banaa hoon Hindustaani
ho tum poochhoge kyun
main abhi bataataa hoon
main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
ho main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani

teeje mulk kaa dekho pol
mil gayi madam Taalmatol
dekh ke uskaa pyaaraa mukhdaa
main to huaa daanwaadol
choron ki woh saathi nikli
kar gayi meraa bistar gol
saaraa maal udaa kar le gayi
de gayi thandaa paani
main hoon Mister Johny
maine sab mulkon kaa piyaa hai paani
saari duniyaa ghoom-ghaam ke
banaa hoon Hindustaani
tum poochhoge kyun bhai
main abhi bataataa hoon
main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
ho main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani

haha
Johny Hindustaan mein aayaa
dekhi Champaa dil lalchaayaa
jaa ke milaa uski ammaa se
shaadi kaa paighaam tikaayaa
ho gayi shaadi mil gayi Champaa
das bachchon kaa baap kahaayaa
uskaa sachchaa pyaar dekh ke
ban gayaa hoon Hindustaani
main hoon Mister Johny
maine sab mulkon kaa piyaa hai paani
saari duniyaa ghoom-ghaam ke
banaa hoon Hindustaani
arre tum poochhoge kyun
main abhi bataataa hoon
main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani
ho main hoon Johny
badaa toofaani

No, Johnny Walker wasn’t the hero in Maai Baap – Balraj Sahni was. In fact, JW was the villain. A stylish and somewhat comic villain, but still a villain. Minoo Mumtaz was his accomplice. Another of my favourite songs from this film, picturised on JW and Minoo Mumtaz, is Dekho ji dekho meethi ada se.
