Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Duniya kyaa jaane mera afsaanaa

Posted on: December 2, 2010

“Dillagi” (1949) was a movie with some delightful songs in it. Who can forget songs like Tu mera chand main teri chaandni and Murli waale murli bajaa. These songs are timeless classics.

I have realised that even the lesser known songs of old movies are songs worthy of listening. Therefore it is a good idea to discuss even these lesser known songs.

Here is another song from “Dillagi” (1949). It is sung by Suraiyya and picturised on herself. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and Naushad composed the music.

Coming to Suraiyya, I just realised that she is the first and only female actor-singer of the golden era (1949-1980)of Hindi movie songs. There has been no other female singer-actor of the same eminence. Sulakshana Pandit was the only name that comes to mind but she worked in very few movies and she was nowhere as successful as Suraiyya. That way, Suraiyya was one of a kind and she deserves high praise and recognition for being the only one to succesfully combine acting and singing in a career lasting nearly two decades during the golden era of Hindi movie music.

Song-Duniya kyaa jaane mera afsaanaa (Dillagi) (1949) Singer-Suraiyya, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

duniyaa kyaa jaane meraa afsaanaa
kyun gaaye dil ulfat kaa taraanaa
duniyaa kyaa jaane meraa afsaanaa
kyun gaaye dil ulfat kaa taraanaa
duniyaa kyaa jaane

ho ho ho ho
neend na aaye dil bas mein nahin
tu hai kahin to piyaa main hoon kahin
neend na aaye dil bas mein nahin
tu hai kahin to piyaa main hoon kahin
o saajanwaa re
o baalamwaa re
chaandni raaten aur ye samaan
rut bhi anokhi main bhi jawaan
ho ho ho ho
main bhi deewaani tu bhi deewaanaa
phir kaise biite mausam suhaanaa

ho ho ho ho
raat kate na bin tere piyaa
aajaa akele nahin laage jiyaa
raat kate na bin tere piyaa
aajaa akele nahin laage jiyaa
o saajanwaa re
o baalamwaa re
jhilmil taare mast hawaa
chhed de murli aa ke zaraa
ho ho ho ho
tere sang gaaun main kyaa gaanaa
sun-sun ke jisko naache zamaanaa
duniyaa kyaa jaane meraa afsaanaa
kyun gaaye dil ulafat kaa taraanaa
duniyaa kyaa jaane
