These are the days of being political correct. Instead of calling a spade a spade, these days we use euphemisms instead. Thus, what was called an imbecile in the past is now called “differently enabled” and what was once called blind is now called “visually impaired”. Those were the days when cutting trees and hunting tigers was considered the in thing. Now these activities are banned.
Here is a song more than half a century old when a spade was called a spade, if not a shovel.This song is from “Sahaaraa” (1958). Here,Meena Kumari, a blind person, finds himself thrown out of her home. Here she is seen singing a song where she is asking the God to show mercy on blinds.
The song is sung by Lata and it is written by Bharat Vyas. The picturisatio is moving and the lyrics even more so. I am totally in agreement with the line of the song that goes
kisi bande ko yoon majboor na kar
dene ko to de de har dukhdaa
ye aankhen magar benoor na kar
which means- “Subject a person to all kind of misery, but do not deprive him of his sight.”
Indeed, those who have sight and who suffer from miseries should think of those do not even have sight. Then one’s misely will certainly appear quite trivial and manageable.
