I think I will not be entirely wrong if I say that one of the reasons songs appeal to all of us is not just because of the song itself. This may be true for a large majority of songs but I am sure each one of us has his or her own bouquet of songs that are special mainly of memories these songs represent.

“Champakali” (1957) is a movie which is known to music lovers for its iconic song Chhup gaya koyi re door se pukaar ke). All these days, this song was all I knew about this movie.

“Bahu” (1953) is an obscure movie by now. Like many obscure movies of those days, even this movie has some nice and wonderful songs in it that not too many people know about. Stumbling upon such songs is always a rewarding experience.

During the golden era of Hindi movie music (circa 1950-1980), things were quite simple and rudimentary in most fields. Hindi movie songs tended to become popular only if the movie did better, and the movies did better only if they followed certain set formulaes. Movies that tended to deviate from the standard formulae tended to fail and as a result, the songs of such movies too would suffer.

For most music lovers,”Bheegi Raat” (1965) is synonymous with its iconic song viz. Dil jo na kah saka. Of course, no Hindi movie worth its salt had only one song in it. This movie too had more songs in it, it is just that the other songs from this movie got overshadowed by the above mentioned song.

“Grihasthhi” (1963) was a family drama in which Ashok Kumar and Nirupa Roy (the standard couple of those days) play the parents of no less than seven daughters ! So naturally, much of the movie revolves around the efforts of the parents to get their daughters married off.

Aise mein agar tum aa jaate

“Balam”(1949) is a movie that had Suraiyya in it alongwith Wasti,Nigar Sultana, Agha etc. This movie is also significant for the fact that Suraiyya and Lata sang together for the first time (out of a total of just five such occasions). I have in fact already discussed the first such Lata-Suraiyya duet which is O o pardesi musaafir kise kartaa hai ishaare .
